Just when their thing gets popular they decide to bring in this 4c connection fee. unless you stay on the phone for a long time it isn't even cheap anymore, what were these bastards thinking? it now costs 7c to make a 30 second local call. their linux client is also quite neglected for some reason. even the quality isn't that great anymore.

I pity the fool who would actually pay for one of those wifi skype phones. That thing is permanently locked to skype so if they decide to push up their prices they got you by the balls

How on earth does it cost you that much? I can call my girlfriend on her mobile in the US at anytime for 1 cent per minute using Skype. They could push the price up 1000% and it would still be amazing value. Skype ftw!

I'm sure there's ways around that, and rest assured if they do push prices up, there willbe a whole lot more people working to circumvent the lock.

end of 2006 they decided to bring that in.. if they pushed up the prices by 1000% it would cost over 10c a minute + connection fee so still cheaper than eircon, i think. i dunno how much those bastards are charging these days but who dials directly via eircom anymore for that sort of international stuff. I use mostly voiptalk myself, cause i can use it directly with my E61, they are just an anonymous SIP provider so easy to change. don't need any special software

to get a skype phone to connect to anything other than skype you'd probably have to write a new firmware from scratch. i wonder has anyone installed linux on one yet

Try http://www.voipbuster.com/en/index.html or there sister site if you phone the UK http://www.voipstunt.com/en/index.html

free local calls and you can forward the call to your landline for just 5c

    Hi,

I think looking at the rates of calls is not the only point to look at. All extra services are now more and more important, especially because there are many VoIP providers with very low rates.

    For instance:
Call quality, technical support, possibility to forward calls, voicemail, voicemail to e-mail ...
Another important point is that an IP phone is so much better than a softphone. You can phone when you computer is switched off, sound the quality is better, it can be wireless ...

For that reason I'm not a big fan of Skype or VoipStunt and I don't mind paying a bit more per month to have a greater quality and range of services. I'm with Blueface and I'm glad with their service.

    Cheers
    G.

This is why I would always advocate SIP - The biggest advantage is using SIP for VOIP is choice - you can select anything from a complete virtual PBX to a low frills phone service and re-use the same hardware. If you don't like the terms you can switch to a new provider. ....let's hope skype starts to die soon.

Incidentally, I use freespeech.ie and most of my calls to the US are FREEEEE.

and only €2.25 a minute to call Iridium satellite phones. what a bargain. the sip provider i'm using now charges £4.80
