I am currently using the P2X USB adapther. Bought it on play.com. It is grand using the playstation joybad on some games but it eant no good for others i.e Streetfighter 2 Hyper Edition.

What is the best joypad out there??

I also use a TV out \ S video cable to display the games my LCD TV - now that looks class.

    Top 3 Mame games:
    1. Streetfighter 2
    2. Final Fight

I am sooooo tempted to get one of those X-Arcade joybads. Are they worth the money, arent they like 200 dollars??

Oh remembers Qix, or even better, twin Qixs - two player heaven

I have a PS2 USB adapter too, configured like the SNES :D
Have it hooked up to my TV and the audio hooked up to 2.1. Pretty fine result if I may say so myself.

Top 5 Mame Games (No Order):
2 Player Amazing Maze (30 years old and still bloody addictive!!)
    Marvel Vs. Capcom 2
    Virtua Racing
    Metal Slug X
2 Player Bubble Bobble (Utter madness!)

I would seriously recommend against a PS2 pad. The d-pad is worthless in most games and 4 face buttons aren't enough for many games including SF2, I hate using shoulder buttons in capcom fighters. I use an MK1 microsoft sidewinder. Brilliant joypad with an excellent d-pad, 6 face buttons and two shoulder buttons.

I find the dualshock d-pad dead handy in racing games as it's touch sensitive, I agree with you on the PS2 pad being quite crappy on fighting games. On the keyboard the moves are pecision perfect but on the pad it's bloody annoying as you're mashing the buttons just so you can do a simple move. Though moves on Neo Geo fighting games are easier to do than on the keyboard.

I've just bought myself a Hori Real Arcade Pro Stick. Works for MAME as well as PS3.

    Got it from Play-asia.com

    Here's a review

Should be arriving today (so the UPS online shipping tracker seems to say) so I'll let you know if it's woth the 119 euro I spent on it :)

Seems a little big but still, damn that's a sweet controller. Typical if your computer refuses to acknowledge it :p

I've a similar MAME/ps2-usb adaptop thing going on as well.
I find a ps2 joypad is grand for most games , I have 2 cheapo PS2 arcade sticks (joystick and 8 big buttons and a few smaller ones)as well that I use with it .

    BUT!!!

Have you ever tried playing Track and field with a dance mat??
I hooked a ps1 mat that I bought in game up to the usb adaptor , and with some careful button configuration (<- to left -> to right and /\ to action) I was able to play it fairly well.twenty minutes of play nearly killed me though!

Ha Ha :D I can imagine your legs going 90............wait, how did you do the long jump or any of those games where you press the middle button at the peak of your speed?? Still, love to try it! Pfft, who needs a Wii?

I had (from memory) , the middle button (action) mapped to the up "/\" pad.
    So it wasnt that hard.
Except that I nearly had a coronary with all the running on the spot after a few minutes;)

How've you got your PC hooked up to a CRT TV? I've my pc hooked up to a 26" LCD and it looks good when running mame games (I'm still waiting on my HRAP stick though so I'm not playing it yet).

What Hori sticks have you got?

Odd, no one has mentioned the most user friendly way to get into MAME, a modded Xbox, just pick up a 2nd hand machine and do what comes naturally with it, chip it and bung in a big ass hard drive, then find a complete rom dump online and a purpose built Xbox frontend for MAME to run through, pick up the X-Arcade sticks, double one, plus the necessary adaptor and off you go, perhaps download the plans for a cabinet if you are handy with a saw!

I've been playing MAME since the late '90s and this is the best way, Xbox S controller is very nice, easy to use, good analog control where needed too.

DVI to HDMI perfect for HD but for mame its a nonrunner.

Got 2 Hori 2s before liksang went bang.

How expensive is that set up of your though Ciderman? Those x-arcade sticks are really expensive!!

I'm trying to get the closet experience to having a cabinet in my house (I mean aprt from the cabinet I have that my girlfriend won't allow in the house) so I've spent the following so far:

My parents old PC - Free
26" LCD TV (using as PC monitor) - 550
MAME collection (buying from a friend) - 20
Hori Real Arcade Pro Stick 3 - 120

So all in all mine will have cost me 690 quid, though to be honest the LCD was really bought for my PS3. I'm trying to squeeze as much stuff into one room as I can, so the TV is a spacesaver!! If I was buying a monitor for MAME I could get a 19" one for 50, which would bring the cost down significantly!!

    :)

I only recently hooked my laptop up to my HDTV for mame. I still dont have a joypad tho so only dicking about really. I might pick up a joypad tonight and see about playing some old school mame goodness. I tried final fight and SFA3 and they looked fine on my HDTV.

    Top MAME games:

    Golden axe
    final fight
    metal slug

I've just got myself an old PC and put MAME on it, hooked it up to my 26" HDTV and it looks great.

I've just recently bought this arcade stick to play it with too, and will probably (hopefully) be getting another one (though not one as extravagant ... in fact far from it) over the next couple of weeks.

    Top MAME game

    Crime Fighters
    Street Fighter 2

The only way to play MAME games is in a proper arcade cabinet (IMO). I'm just finishing making my own MAME cabinet and standing there mashing buttons for hours just brings back great memories.

Cool, what did you do? Did you build the cabinet itself from scratch or buy it and then mod it? When I get the time I'm going building a MAME cabinet myself, I'll have my day yet!
