Im trying to rip the audio off streaming videos. neither garage band nor audacity will not work as it seems to only want to record through the mic as opposed to through the soundcard. (ie it picks up the sound of my speakers and thats not good enough).
am i not doing it right or is there a better program?

should be able to set audacity to record in the mode "what u hear" this will record basically what you hear in as clear quality that it comes through your speakers.

Get the VideoDownloader extension for Firefox and the Perian extension for Quicktime.

Use firefox's VideoDownloader extension to get the video from the internet, then open it in Quicktime and export to audio.

    http://javimoya.com/blog/youtube_en.php - VideoDownloader

    http://perian.org/ - Perian

    you may need Quicktime pro

It's an excellent program, and will do exactly what you need.

Wiretap Pro... or basic free one! By far my favourite choice for this task!
