    Hi,

I am looking to buy a FTA sat kit in Dublin and am looking for recommendations on make/models to buy and those to avoid. Satellite.ie do a ferguson model and maplins do a fortec model - any ideas which is better?

No idea which is better. All i can say is that I have always had excellent service from satellite.ie

With regards to Maplins, I find them excellent too, but they don't have the indepth knowledge about satellite that Tony in satellite.ie would have.

I bought mine from SatWorld down in Kimmage. Found them very good too I have to say. After sales service (which is probably most important to me... tend to make my mind up what I want before I go to a physical shop...) was very good.

Is there a spec anywhere for the fortec model just to compare features of it and the ferguson.

does the ferguson have a card slot?

No free to air receivers by their very nature do not have card slots. From a glance at the fortec specs it does not seem to have RF output or digital audio output although is does have blind scan which can be useful for enthusiasts searching for broadcast feeds etc. so I guess its really down to what you will be using it for.

I'd vouch for satellite.ie also, good stock especially the triax dishes.

Go with ferguson if it has a card slot. Ferguson comes preprogrammed with all FTA channels saving you time worrying about codes

If he only plans on receiving FTA channels, then he won't need the card slot. he would need it if he is considering Pay TV from Europe (Not SKY) in the future

i was hoping to get a unit that would allow me to obtain ch4 via a uk card slotted in it.

On a seperate question - i just want to receive the standard bunch of uk channels, not sure which sat 'll be aiming at , 28.2 deg astra 2 probably - given this what size dish should i be looking for that will give good image quality even in poor weather (i am in dublin). is 60cm sufficient or should i get 80cm+ ?

you need a sky digibox in that case, this is not FTA kit as ch4 is not free to air.

I don't have a picture but it has 2 x scarts, 1 x video, 1 x digital audio,1 x rf out, LNB in , LNB loop out and serial socket for patching, firmware upgrade, channel edit etc.

    Hope this helps

60cm will be sufficient for astra 2

here's the signal that we get..

As Tony says, you need a Sky Digibox and a viewing card to get CH4.

BTW I have a Fortecstar and the picture quality is not good. The unit is very unfriendly to program, too! It takes FOURTEEN button presses to store a "favorite", compared with ONE button press on my little "SkyPacker SL65-12".

I find the Technomate TM-1000D Super's great receivers at the moment. Easy to set up and intuitive menu.
