Folding@HOME on PS3

    I noticed it takes like 0.06seconds a frame on the PS3 and on my PC it's about 40seconds a frame?

    Is this just the power of the PS3 or a crap PC? My PC is a P4 2.8Ghz with 512MB RAM.

    Or is it different frames for PS3 and PC? it's always been that slow on my PC.

    BTW the box-frame on folding looks neat :)

    As far as i know its because of the ps3's cell processor which is extremely good at doing multiple calculations which is what is needed for Folding Home.

    It's the Cell. Tres bien at folding.

    They get different frames too. The Cell gets what its especially good at, just like if you run the GPU client on an ATI graphics card.

    Standard PCs get everything that Cells and ATI graphics cards aren't good at.

    yea from what i read it seems like they are using the processing power of all the machines participating in it to make some sort of super compter??? sounds like a cheesy plan for world domination to me, can any explain what it is in simple terms? and if i click agree to it will i be aiding THE DEMISE OF THE WORLD!!!!! :eek:

    *Raises hand* I'm fairly simple, so I'll give it a go.
    Your box is given a chunk of work to do, number-crunching/simulations of how proteins "fold", then send the results back.
    Then based on these results and the results of all the other people sending back their little chunks of work, they can figure out something scientific that helps their research into various diseases/conditions... which I guess they then share with the rest of the scientific community, publishing papers and so on.

    Better explained here --> http://folding.stanford.edu

    Boards.ie folding team ftw

    They are simulating the folding of protiens. If things go the way they expect it to then thats fine but when the simulation dosnt go well they look closer at why. Apparently when protiens dont fold the way they are suppose to is the reason why allot of genetic illeness happen. At the end of the day if your ps3 is sitting there doing nothing you could be helping in a small way to one day develope a cure for something. Its a no brainer really wack it on if you have a ps3, if you have a pc you leave on allot downloading etc you could also have folding on that too crunching away in the background.

    Theres no 360 version but microsoft said they would be open to doing something simular, folding is not the only project like this going on just the one with the most users. A 360 wont be as fast as the ps3 but thats just the way the cell was built (basically 8 processors on one chip)

    Folding = :D

    jasus 512mb ram on your pc is nothing. You need 3gb of Ram nowadays especially with high powered games. I think you have a rather ****e pc
