should a telecaster have a maple fretboard in order to be a real tele?

i spotted a US standard on ebay in red but it has a rosewood fretboard and i've always believed this to be against what a tele is about. i can't get time to go shopping so i can't really compare.

Well, one with a rosewood board will sound slightly warmer and less "snappy" (in theory) but imo, it doesn't really matter. If you like the tele on ebay, get the tele on ebay.

Get the one you really want. There will be more Telecasters on ebay tomorrow, you don't need to go for the red one if you don't really like it.

it's not that i don't like it, red is quite funky and i prefer the looks of the rosewood fretboard. in fact i have a rosewood fretboarded strat.

if it's true that despite my prejudices, a tele with a rosewood fretboard has no discernable tone difference, i could get very used to the idea of this guitar- especially if it's a bargain. it wouldn't be my main guitar anyway.

I can be completely dispassionate here. so shoot me straight-is it at all a compormise to get a rosewood fretboard tele- my only plan is to plug the tele shaped hole in my lineup and i don't want to end up getting a half arsed tele

    It is not a compromise.
