    Hi everyone,

I am trying to set up a society and I am looking for signatures for the petition to give to CSC. If anyone is interested in signing the petition could you send me your name and student number? rdonohoe gmail.com

The society is the Dublin University Humanist Society. Humanism is a democratic and ethical life stance, which affirms that human beings have the right and responsibility to give meaning and shape to their own lives. It stands for the building of a more humane society through an ethic based on human and other natural values in the spirit of reason and free inquiry through human capabilities. It is not theistic, and it does not accept supernatural views of reality.

    Peace and Love,

    Rob

Hey! It's me, in the plural!
The irony here is that I'm theistic. Maybe this is my evil alter ego? :p

At home and patently NOT studying. How pleasant! What's everyone else up to?

P.S- The sign language society ftw!

Unfortunately, you also need to go through a fairly rigourous review process and a couple of years of severe auditing before they'll actually recognise you and fund you properly. Was going to set up a Pirate Soc back in 1st year, then realised we'd last about 40 seconds in the pitch meeting before Joe O'Gorman physically threw us out of CSC.

You'll be funded properly from day one, after the arbritrary rigourous decision about your admittance is made.

pirate soc ha been suggested before and has in fact come around in 3 guises.
one being a music piracy rights based organisation which lasted even less than 40 seconds.....
anyway there isnt actually a pitch meeting. and also this year i think with the make-up of the officers and the exec pirate soc (as a society who celebrate all things piratical) would have a better chance than before. a better chance i say but not a good chance.

no. the pitch meeting didnt ever really mean anything. the decision usually is made aaagges before. unofficially of course.

From my experience, that's not true. The proposed society is discussed first to contemplate any problems and to prepare the questions that need to be answered, but the decision was always made after the proposers had been given an opportunity to answer these problems.

How exactly do they decide which societies deserve to be societies?

Whether or not it would be of benefit to the College over a long period, essentially.

If you get approval, my plans for the Dublin University Consumerist Society are so back on.

    What would this society do?

Provide a forum of discussion about and promote the doctrines of consumerism in the political, social and religious spheres in life. Consumerism promotes the individual, the natural pursuit of commercial happiness and adopts the relativist self-existentialism of Weimarian philosopher Martin Golddigger. Consumerism is non-theistic, but encourages the use of televangilism for those who need it.
