He's a fine one to be asking "how can Denise Van Outen be live on the Tubriddy Show, when she was apparently somewhere else the same time?"

My answer Billy is "the same way that Martin O'Dwyer can be 'Live' ;) on Deise AM...

He's so up his own a

Should have written it proper :o
Stupid comment he made this morning on his "live" broadcast.... implying that the Tubbridy show is an amateur operation since they had Denise Van Outen (uk tv celeb) on their 'live' show last Saturday, and she was elsewhere when it was broadcast.....
    Hope that explains it :)

But Tubbridy Tonight is live, I know for a fact as I was part of the audiance once and called somebody straight after to see if they saw me and they did :D

    Perhaps they've changed things since?

I don't think poor Billy has got the whole broadcasting thing at all. Despite his long years in the industry.

Really don't know how he's lasted so long .... Plenty could host a show like his, but without the 'buddy biased' opinions, and putting down people he doesn't happen to agree with. He's constantly 'cocking up' .
WLR should send him on a course !

Wasn't he a priest before he joined WLR ? or Is that just one of the longest standing rumours around the town ?

I also heard that he was a former priest. I also heard that he had a gay marriage some where in Europe.:D Don’t ask!

All joking a side, I saw him around town a few times and got an e-mail from him once and I got the impression that he is a ball*&ks. I later heard from people who worked in WLR that he is.;)

He is an ex-Preist and he is gay as far as I know but most importantly he is the worst flipping broadcaster everrrrrrr. I hav'nt actually heard him in years but I'm assuming he is stil tripping and stumbling over ever second word.

    Mike.

Yep, he used to have a show on WLR when he was a priest iirc, Father Billy. He is gay, I think himself and the hubby have that fancy looking B+B/Hotel out near Butlerstown.
All of this is neither here nor there though, he's an absolutely terrible broadcaster.

I heard him the last time I was down there. It was like been tranquilized. They should Broadcast him through the countries prisons to keep everyone compliant:)

billy is a good commentator if you totally agree with what he says, if you are of a different opinion than him then he will do his utmost to discredit you opinion. A good commentator is the person who is impartial, and stimulates both sides in the conversation.
so if you lessen to Timmy Ryan he will make your whole day, but if you lessen to billy McCarthy he will make your whole week.

He's great fodder for the 'oul wans of the town. He's out of touch with the youth though, to put it mildly.

No not really because DeiseAM begins at 10am and Niall Power finishes at 9.50am

What really bugs me about McCarthy is the rigid way he sticks to his advertising breaks and shunts people off abruptly , his favourite line seems to be "we're right up on time I'm afraid " , unless that is if he's discussing religion , cooking or theatre which brings me on to that reviewer he has on for shows , he is absolutely cringeworthy

This only happens, as you point out, to people not belonging to the cooking/literary/theatre/fringe fraternities who enjoy a disproportionate amount of time on his programme.

And yes - he was a priest. He used to present a Saturday morning show called 'The Good News Programme'. And as one earlier poster so effectively points out - you're fine on his programme as long as you don't disagree with his point of view.

But I think at the root of this is the fact that there is no competition. A city of this size should easily support two local radio stations.....and not in a situation where the owners have interests in both. Only in Ireland......

No question, Beat is regional remember and its got no real non-music output as far a I know. I suspect the BCI like one 'local' station per county as it affords the licence holder a comfort zone, re advertising revenue. They should make it easier/cheaper to run a radio station.

You're not seriously saying Billy "composes good 'poetry'... "

I can see how your lovely quote would apply to literature :) , but a little inappropriate (sp) in a thread titled "Billy McCarthy" !

Sorry Val, but he's just shite. You can quote whoever you like, but the end result will be the same.

Lot of cocky F*****s working for Wlr and especially Beat, but a lot of people dont know, that Beat 102 103 should never have got its licence in the first place. but thats another story, and im afraid I can say anymore:(

What was the name of that pirate station that applied for the licence that Beat won? You wouldn’t be a bitter support of theirs, would you.:)

Do Beat not have a 20% non music requirement like most other stations?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 128 ✭✭Mr Ed

ABC Power 104 was the pirate station that applied for the same licence as Beat 102-103 and yes Beat has to comply with the statutory regulation imposed by the BCI of 20% news and current affairs.

The old ABC was the business, was ABC Power 104 directly connected?

What does Beat transmit to meet the 20% news requirement?

Back on topicc, I think Billy is one of the worst broadcasters on local or national radio. He's a poor communicator, a poor presenter and to me he comes across an utterly charmless individual. But he's also the director of programmes - it's like Alex Ferguson picking himself to play striker for Man Utd !!

The chances of Billy sacking himself are pretty slim, but he really should listen to a tape recording of one of his shows, even somebody whose judgement is as bad as his must surely be struck by the desperately poor quality of his broadcasts.

He doesn't seem to be able to complete a single sentence without stumbling, stuttering, or mispronouncing something, I mean come on, he's a radio presenter for God's sake, he's supposed to be able to speak !!

I should turn off but WLR is the only place I can hear local news, local issues and local people. I avoided the station for so long because of BIlly but now I listen to Deise a.m. DESPITE him rather than because of him !

I worked in WLR a few years ago and I must say I found Billy to be a genuinely unpleasant man, far removed from the "man of the people" act he puts on when on the radio. Like a lot of local radio DJs, he was completely in love with the sound of his own voice and he was obsessed with money. There was nothing he wouldn't do to bring in extra cash or save a few quid, even screwing quite a few local artists out of money they were owed because they had been working with a handshake agreement, rather than a contract. Not a nice man at all.

Timmy Ryan, though, made me laugh. He was obsessed with birthdays. When he used to do the drivetime show, he used to spend hours writing interminable little links to use in between songs. Stuff like "A big happy birthday to Bridget in Ferrybank, who's 62 today. You'll be pleased to hear, Bridget, that you share a birthday with Caroline Corr, who's 33 today. And speaking of Caroline Corr... here's 'Runaway' by The Corrs." For some reason, he thought this was fantastic radio.

Then there was Geoff Harris, who used to go to local factories, interview the most monosyllabic man in the world about the machinery he operated and then put the whole thing on his show. He thought it was great stuff!

Nice to hear about the "real" Billy ;) . I think he's under the illusion that most people tune in to listen to him, and his 'sermons'. Whereas I think alot of people just want to hear what local people are talking about !
I don't know why they don't shuffle the presenters around, and perhaps they'll find someone who could do Deise AM better... Lots of National radio stations do/did this, and it works fine when people get used to it !
