Cheque in the post - What to do?

Right, when my flatmate got home last night he took an envelope out of his pocket that had been delivered to our address. It hadn't got our address on it though. The address bore a small resemblance to ours, but it most certainly wasn't ours.

Anyway, he had collected it from our postbox on his way to work, and opened it in work.

It contained a cheque for two and a half thousand euro. Uncrossed

It also contained one of them 'with compliments' pieces of paper with the address and phone number of the senders of the cheque.

What should we do? The address on the envelope is obviously confusing An Post, so we can't resend it - anyway, I'd be a bit nervous sending an uncrossed cheque for so much through the post, should some nefarious individual come accross it, by fair means or foul.

Suppose you could write a letter to the person that it's supposed to be for and if An Post manage to deliver it correctly they could ring you to arrange to pick up the cheque.

    Cash that baby.

If you want to be done for fraud.

Just tear it up. The bank will see it hasn't been cashed, the sender will cancel it the person that it belongs to will come looking for it. Easy.

I could do the idiotic thing and say cash it but like timmywex said just get in contact with the sending address

Ring the number on the compliment slip. Explain.

It's not made out to cash, it's made out to the intended recepient.

I wasn't thinking of doing anything untoward with it at all, but god knows I could do with the two an a half grand, but no, I couldn't live with the guilt dammit.

I'm going to ring the senders and let them know what happened.

    Better be a reward!

er....this is percidely why cheques exist.....

Unless it's made out to Cash or you you won't be able to change it.
(unless you go to a 25% cashing no questions asked agency)
Anyway the bank will write your ID details on the back if you cash it.

Think of the person who i missing out on 2.5K maybe they don't meet their mortgage repayment if they don't get it....maybe they don't eat :)

Phone the company and get them to send a courier out to you to collect the cheque.

Yes but its more like 10-15% but they ask for ID and or your details.
There is one on dame just past ******* There is absolutely no point in any other kind individual offering you cah for it even at a 25% cut because the cheque will ultimatley have to be deposited in a bank acount and the cheque can then be traced to the individual who deposited it and if it's a 'cash for cheques' company that have absolutely no information on who the payee is they will be deemed liable for full amount as they didn't follow financial regualtion i.e recording payee name, passport no etc. So this cheque is absolutley no good to anyone (except the genuine payee) unless they fancy taking an extremely risky legal move and cashing it with a shop or bar etc. Usually shops or bars will only cash cheques for people they know anyways. Opening someone elses mail is also a crime. You should destroy the cheque and wait for the genuine payee to get in touch with the sneder who will check if the cheque has been cashed and then reissue another one.

Maybe you could contact the bank/credit card company that issued the cheque?

Don't attempt to cash it in.

There will be no reward. They will most likely cancel it as soon as you inform them.
