Can anyone suggest somewhere in Ireland for a weekend of bird shooting, pref a coastal area ,pref with puffins. I've always had an itch to photograph puffins for some reason. Aran island perhaps? Right time of year?

I've not been (yet) myself, but according to birdwatcher type friends of mine, the best time to go is end of June - beginning of July. The puffins, if there are any, are apparently to be found at the southern end of the island where the sea stack is where the gannets congregate.

There's at least ONE on Ireland's Eye, if you can find it.

I'd love to go west sometime, and get some good/decent picts of puffins.

Might be worth getting a few together for that. I'd certainly be interested in going.

The puffins land in the middle of April and head odd again at the end of July. They head out to see and don't touch land again until the following April. Late June, early July is the best time to catch them. That said, if it is a scorchingly sunny day you might be disappointed. They have a tendency to leave land on very warm, sunny days.

The Skelligs are worth a visit even when the puffins aren't there. It is one of the most amazing places on the planet.

I agree Valentia, looks like a feast for sore eyes and itchy trigger fingers. Much appreciated all who replied.
Just had a look at a few Skellig related sites, time on the island only seems to be about 21/2 hours, is that long enough?

Cheers Dilbert, I hadn't time to reply to Rojo this morning even though I saw the question.
Anyway, there should be enough info in that thread to see anyone interested getting there and back safely.

I have a week of work at the end of June so I think I'll head over to the Saltees. Looks like a fantastic area.

I'm waiting got the opportunity to go there myself. It seems that mid-week, regardless of the weather, is not an option - unless you are willing to fork out
€120 for the trip. Very little demand from the public. Weekends are best - cost is usually €22 a head when there is a full boatload.

    Rathlin!!! http://www.irelandsislands.ie/Result/IndividualResultTCS.aspx?touristItemID=62111

Beautiful place, *loads* of puffins (and other sea birds), you can stay on the island, and you're right next to the Giants Causeway and Dunluce Castle, glens of Antrim and Bushmills Distillery (mmmmm.... Bushmills....).

Also, its a lot less populated than places in the south as tourism hasn't kicked off properly again since the troubles ended.
