Freeware To Do Hard Drive Backups . . .

    Folks,

As the Windows XP Home Ed Backup procedure is kind of primative (only allows backing up on floppy drive!) I am looking for a suitable freeware wizard to do proper full hard drive backups to another internal/external drive.
Ideally one that works to a schedule, say at every logout or every night at 10 pm.

Can anyone recommend reliable freeware to do this (very wise!)type of task ?

    Regards,

    Tak.

You can use windows task schedule to do a copy of all your important folders at specific times, using the xcopy command. Should be easy enough, although i've never done it before personally.

    Maybe xcopy . . . or better still diskcopy . . .

I suppose that would mean a small script file to be activated at a given time.

Not as tasty as a freeware "wizard" program but a respectable fall-back.

    Thanks S_K,

    Tak.

Check this out, its a free microsoft application that works really well, only thing is, I cant see an option in it to automatically back-up at a certain time/event. Though after you set up your back-up options for the first time, all it takes is a click or two each time.

Correct me if i'm wrong but I think diskcopy is just for floppy disks.

I recommend SyncToy as well. You can set it up on Task Scheduler too.

    S_K,

Xcopy only for files - not entire drives.

Diskcopy as you say is only for floppy drive.

Since no freeware ghoster was available on the web, I took trial version of Acronis TrueImage.

Did the job okay. Can set up scheduled backups also.

Only problem so far has been that I cannot get into the User Accounts area.
It generates an error as soon as it opens.

Might be related to fact that my old administrator account was not in the name of "Administrator" for security reasons.

Will solve that one another day !

BTW the trial version of Norton Ghost does not allow drive imaging . . .
You have to buy it to find out how good it is, seemingly.

    Tak.

P.S. Sync Toy won't image drives either, Zilog.

I use syncback myself. Not sure about the scheduling - maybe the Pro
    version.
