and saw another anti virus program avast

so whats better for a laptop with vista

You didn't download AVG Free so...it's free. No trial period.

I'd suggest giving Avast a shot. I've been using AVG for years - So many installs just 'break' after a dodgy update, and last night, for the first time in years ... one of my PCs has a virus (Vista.) - I detected the virus before AVG. pfft. It's great AV, it pisses over the majority of commercial alternatives but it's not perfect but so I'd say try avast.

Avast me hearties! For it updates in the background, and gives me no guff!
I had troubles with AVG so i kicked it to the curb.

AVG broke on me a few months ago as well, also after an update. I have been using Anti Vir since.

AVG also acted up on me after an update, so I removed it and installed Avast! I find it quite good, though I must remove that "Virus database has been updated" sound whenever it's updated. I sometimes have the volume left up high, and the voice can be quite startling if sitting in silence! :D

Oh is that Avast that does the noise thing? A girl i work with must have that on her laptop, every morning, usually when its very quiet and you're having a good day-dream or the like that stoopid american accent yells to all & sundry... Scares the crap out of me...

Vista is making stuff up as it goes along.

I heartily recommend Avast, it's quick, effective, and hassle-free. And Free.

    Hi all,

i have a similar problem to headshot. I have Vista on my laptop and i'm trying to download AVG/Avast but Windows security centre won't let me download the EXE file. I have windows defender running and no active antivirus on the laptop. Do i have to disable the firewall? i tried changing settings but still won't let me.

Only got my Vista laptop last week and put AVG on it. Works fine I think. Updates daily no problem. First time using it - I've been using a corporate edition of NAI up to now.

On a slightly related note - and only cos others mentioned it - are there any firewalls that are Vista compatible? I tried Comodo and Outpost but they're not.
