    Hi All,

A little help please. I am building a HTPC. It will use a creative Labs XFI Fatality Soundcard.

Can I use the soundcard instead of an AMP (this is probably sacriledge on this board but hey ho ), and if so what Speakers can ye recommend. I have 2 small kids, and running wires across the room is a no-no, as such I am limited to speakers at the front, under or adjacent to, the TV. I presume 2.1 is the best I can do? TBH with the mayhem the kids are capable of the less HE gear I have around the better and I dont fancy them destroying a decent AMP on me (the list of destruction so far includes 5 DVD Players and an old Xbox, aswell as 3 DVD rewriters in the PC ;-)

    Tnx a mil,

    inqui

    Inquitus,

You can connect a soundcard to powered speakers in any configuration 2.1 upwards. There's no heresy involved as far as I'm concerned - Logitech and Creative make decent PC speakers - but the sound quality is unlikely to be as good as if you outut SPDIF from the HCPC to an AV Receiver and use "regular" speakers.

If you want you can just connect the soundcard directly to the TV - most TVs have audio-in (two RCA sockets, Red and White), I've tried this in the past and it was fine - could be an interim option if your situation makes it difficult to keep a separates system from being trampled by miniature wildebeests, who also delight in poking their fingers in loudspeakers...............
