putting examples of work online

In my current role I design and develop missioin critical database-driven intranet applications.
These use asp.net and sql server 2000 (i do both ends)
    I want to move jobs.
Would it be ok for me to put examples of sites I've done online to demonstrate what I do here to potential employers? Obviously I wouldn't put the data online - just use dummy demo data instead, but would it be ok to have duplicates of the systems?

Check your contract with the companies you have worked with. Usually it says something along the lines of they own the code. If thats the case i assume you would need their permission.

I do have something like that in my contract.
I'm experimenting with taking screenshots. They're database-driven sites and hold confidential data so I'm having to cut out large portions of the screen. It looks stupid.

Why not just build a demo site. Seems unprofessional to do what you are suggesting. I think it would look bad not good to a potential employer.

I agree with Boston B, build a demo site.

You could even just make up some screenshots outlining what makes the system good and how it performs etc. As long as you know about all the features you include (which im sure you do) then it wont be a problem.

Yeah I'll do that - whatever other way I try to approach it just looks stupid. Thanks for the replies.

Screen shots of your demo site, and other work, say a site that's live to the public, with no sensitive data. is a good idea for interviews. Keep them in a smart A4 portfolio.
