    hi,

was just wondering has anyone done done the pilots training in Oxford or South Africa? 80k seems like a lot of money, has anyone had any experience with this or know someone who has? Do you get enough training and flying hours for an Airline to consider you for a position? Is it worth the investment?

I'm not sure on the cost but my cousin done a course in Spain and finished it last Oct/Nov, he got a job with BA Lite ( at least I think that's what they are called) in Feb. Like I said I don't know how much his course was or how much he gets paid now, but over the course of his career he'll make back the course fee.

He and a few others from the same course got the same job, he was top of his class though and his results were phenomenal he got something like a 98% average. I'm not sure how the rest of his class got on.

The place in spain is probably flight training europe in Jerez. They are slightly more expensive from what I remember (an ex did it there 2 years ago) but the quality of their graduates is excellent and they are often recruited directly from the school. Yes you do get enough time logged for your full commercial license but you will only do the conversion to type when you get a job. 98% would not be that unusual. It's not rocket science but the standards are high.

yeah i did my license in jerez in spain aswell for private use but the irish guys I was with joined up with ryanair and still had to fork out i think another 27000 euro for the ryanair 737-800 training. good enough salary if you factor in sector pay but it would take you a long time to payback so the return on investment is pretty poor. Do some people just love flying and don't see its as a job just an extension of a hobby.

If you can get a job, and stick at it for a good few years. IMO You'll eventually make it back. But competition is very high.

I hope its not too personal a question but how much did it cost you in total to do it in Spain? What was it like and how long did it take from start to finish? Did you find it hard to get work afterwards?

    Cheers

Strange, I received an email through monster.ie today about a company looking for "young professionals", willing to train to become pilots. It says it's based in "Canada and mainland Europe", so I'm guessing it might be the place in Spain.

Its a 3 year course, which is €65k, which apparently covers:

Cost to get to and from Canada,
    All living expenses
    All professional coaching,
Transfers to and from the training school,
Year 2 will see you training as a pilot with income
Year 3 work experience on Taxi routes or up to 10 seater private aircraft..

It seems quite good alright, I'd be a bit skeptical about handing over 65k, and to live in a place Ive never seen though.

But I suppose, if you have a love of airplanes, and the cash...why not?

I always figured you could just go to a school here or something :p

I think thats an Irish company based over in North Bay, Canada. A friend of mine has been over there since last august and is loving every minute of it. Doing his air law and night exams at the moment. Not entirely sure about the money or job prospects over there, and it costs a shedload to get your licence converted in Europer.

Jimi-t you wouldn't know the name of the company by any chance?

It works out if you get a job with an airline at the end of it, otherwise you could be in trouble.
