Has anyone had any success with those solar battery chargers? I got one, but haven't had a chance to hook it up, normally my battery is fine, but it could probably do with a top up, seemed like a good idea, so i picked one up in maplin.

How does it work exactly? Is it permanently on the car or do you just hook it up when it's idle? Is there anything to stop it 'over-charging' the battery?

I bought one too a while back - see thread here.

I've been busy doing other stuff so it's still in the box. I believe if you have a lighter socket that works when the engine is off you can just plug it in and it charges the battery. Otherwise (like me) you're looking at hooking it up directly to the battery which is a bit of a pain.

There is some sort of switch that stops it from overcharging I believe.

Bad idea to trickle charge your battery with the alternator connected.
