Weekender fares on Iarnrod Eireann

Just thought it's worth a post, as it's something I didn't know about until recently, and IE don't seem to go out of their way to advertise them.

If you travel regularly by train, or even the odd long journey, you can save a good deal by buying weekender tickets. These are valid for travel on a Friday or Saturday, with return up to the following Tuesday. The ticket itself says Student/Weekender on it, so I think it's the same as the student fare, but they're valid for anyone.

To buy these, you need a weekender ID card, which you can get at the ticket desk if you bring a passport size photo and 7 euro with you. The ID card is valid for 12 months.

As an example, I recently travelled to Ballina with two friends. They paid 42 euro return each. I bought my weekender ID card at the ticket desk, and a weekender return for 33 euro. So even on the one trip I was two euro up.

    Another example I know of:
    Dublin - Carrick-on-Shannon: Full fare 32 / Weekender 24

So even if you're only travelling one or two weekends a year, on some routes it can still work out cheaper to pay the 7 euro and buy the weekender ID card and ticket, if you have a spare passport photo.

Cheers for that ... will have to look into it ... and see if Galway - Dublin has much of a saving :)

Edit: Just had a check on their website ... for galway to dublin ...

    ADULT € 42.00
    CHILD € 21.00
    FAIRCARD € 29.00
    WEEKENDER € 29.00
    STUDENT € 26.50

So thats quite some saving ... Weekender price doesn't look to be the same as the student price from that

If you're under 26 and use the train,it is definately worth getting a fair card

Does anyone know if the Weekender savings apply on the Belfast route?

Do I just ask for a weekender card application at the desk?

I got one of these last year, was 6 Euro then. Have done many a trip to Ballyhaunis from Dublin Hueston and its been 29 Euro return, as oposed to 42 Euro me thinks, for me that is a great saving. Not sure if it will have gone up with the hikes at the beginning of this year though.

Yeah I got one of these in november for going to a hen party in galway. Never travel by train usually, but even one use made it worthwhile!
