I have one that is producing good quality compost after two years. Buy a moulded single piece on with a sliding door at the bottom and a good lid at the top. Don't put cooked food or meat in it and you wont get rats. You can put in vegetable and garden waste, eggshells, dead flowers etc. use a compost starter to kick it off and do not put grass cuttings in for the first few months. I use mine every day to put in potato peelings, onion skins etc.

I have an 'injured' green bin, which had been hit by a car and lost it's wheels.
I drilled it with breather holes and placed a flap in the bottom to give me access to the compost.
I fill it with EVERYTHING - a few eco-nappies, breakfast left-overs, bread, veg waste, biscuits (half chewed...), kitchen wipes (not the best, I know), bottle corks, an amount of grass, dried (but not seeding) weeds...

It works well but needs to be rotated the odd time. I simply scoop out some compost from the bottom and add it to the top.

I don't need a huge flow of compost from it, I add approx 2kg of waste per week.
