I sit here at 4:24 in the morning with the most AGONIZING ear infection. The only reason I'm writing this thread is to try and take my mind off it. I can't sleep because the whole right side of my face feels like one continuous bruise and if I sleep on the left it gets worse, I can only just stare at the wall in agony. I've taken about 4-5 painkillers but they are doing **** all. I am thankfully seeing the doctor tomorrow after 3 days of this hell, but even after I see him, I'll have to wait for the medication to work. I'd like to take this opportunity for you to have a good think about how lucky you are at this present time not to have this type of ear infection, I would not inflict this sort of pain on my worst enemy.....that's all.....:(

Do you by any chance have a head cold?

No chance. It's a pulsation in the center of my ear spreading through my head. Plus (on an un-savory note) there's ample puss coming out of it. Painkillers are kicking in, I'm ok for now. I'm just watching some crazy drum solos to distract me. Although I see where you're coming from, my head does feel like a bruise when I've a cold, but this is only around the area of my ear.

I had an abscess on my ear drum a few years ago. Boy that was so bloody sore. If I moved my head my ear hurt so badly. I was lucky that the antibiotics worked and the swelling went away - if they didn't work the doctor would have had to use a syringe to extract it. How come you have had to deal with this for three days?

I didn't know what it was at first. Lately I've been ducking my whole head in the bath to wash my hair and my ears have had a bad history with water (had UNBELIEVABLE ear infections as a child from water exposure, I mean waking up at 4 in the morning with green **** all the way down my face screaming, spent weeks in hospitals :( ) but a few years ago had an operation on my left ear but it's my right ear this time, square one I suppose. I've been basically trying to wait it out, not being the type of guy to call on the doctor for every small thing but it's gotten worse so I made the call yesterday, should've done it ages ago.

Do you have perferated eardrums by any chance? Cos I do, and if I put my head under the water then they get sore, and I've been plagued with infections since I was a kid. Thankfully I haven't had one in a long time now.

Good luck anyway! Maybe chewing gum would help it (don't stick it in your ear......)

Yes I have perforated ear drums in both ears, should've known better. Painkillers are working a charm now, but I still won't be able to sleep today, I'll have to plough through today. This is where Mr. Coffee starts to shine. I can't chew gum, I can barely eat. Was trying to eat a cereal yesterday and was nearly swallowing it without chewing, ruddy sore I tell thee.

Take three nurofen + , and get an hour to yourself.
I had something very like that last week the nurofen + 3 done the trick.

    Hope that helps.

    Mucho sympathy here.

I once had a bad infection in one ear and an abscess in the other at the same time, I'll never forget it. Go easy though on the nurofen plus, they can be very hard on the stomach. Believe me.. (spew, etc). Try a few Nurofen liquid capsules, they're the business!! Good luck.

Thanks for all the good words, finally got about 1 hours sleep and now I'm off to the doctors to hopefully settle this thing. I need to take Neurofen every few hours or I'm in agony, the type that makes me want to scream and throw dishes all around my kitchen, which I had to try my best not to do earlier on, makes me think how lucky we are to live in an age with such great medicine. Penicillin is the best mold ever!

Ive suffered from them all my life... OUCH!!! Its horrible and you never remember the actual extent of the pain that someones in until you get it again! A little tip- wet a face cloth with cold water and hold it to the side of ur face (the side of the ear ache obviously) and that should numb the pain until the face cloth gets warm. I suppose a pack of frozen peas in a tea towel would work just as well. Oh and nureofen plus... whack about 3 of them into u, it might numb the pain.. it might not but either way you will be in happy land :D

picked up an ear infection in lanzorote one year, not good at all - especially when the airplane was taking off and landing!!!!!!!!!

The ear ache is one of the worst pains I've ever had. I've broken my leg, wrist, arm and God knows what else but I'd take any of them over an ear ache. The worst thing about it is you can't really do anything to ease the pain. You can rub a bruise, rest a broken wrist or put a burn under cold water.

So Glad, what operation did you have on your left ear? Did it fix it?

I was told about an operation where they put like a skin graft on your eardrum, but it can lead to problems like tinnitus.

Was the surgery a big deal or was it done as through outpatients?

I had a hole in my eardrum that needed filling. Not sure if it was skin grafted but they used something, cork or whatever :D . Never heard of Tinnitus, but I'm sure it's not as bad as what I was experiencing prior the operation. Yes, I was told it was a big deal. What they did was cut the back of my ear open and used it as a door then did the job and sealed it back up, as you know the inner ear is highly sensitive and there was a 50% chance of failure & possible infection but it turned out perfectly well, although it was sore afterwards for weeks. I has some stuff clogged in my ear for a few weeks that smelled like really strong rubbing alcohol and when the doctor took it out I was in shock at how bloody BIG and long it went, there's that much room in there??? Ewwww.

By the way, does anyone know if drinking while on heavy painkillers and penicillin is very bad? I'd like a pint or 7 to relax but not sure if it's a big no-no.

Ya have been there before. It was definatly the most pain I had ever experienced in my life, worse even than the time I broke my arm! The doctor gave me these painkillers that knocked me out for about two days!! Such a relief! Oh and Ive always been told that alchol makes antibiotcs not work. Could have been all lies to stop me drinking though :)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,472 ✭✭✭So Glad

I wish I could just be knocked unconscious until this all blows over, so aggravating. I'm snapping a lot at my family because of my pain frustration. I've taken loads of painkillers today and a sleeping tablet and I still can't sleep, it's too awkward and painful. But, I see this as a good thing because when I get better I'm going to be SOOOO grateful and be extra nice to everyone (especially myself) and all of that stuff, can't wait for that!

Now that I think of it, I should have asked the doctor for some painkillers, looks like I'll have to substitute.

Another sleepless night in the basket.

Excellent! The pulsating pain has stopped and I can move my mouth and touch my ear, I think it's going away, so there might be sleep tonight w00t

It's distracting, plus jazz solos can be soothing.

Ok........things have escalated now and I'm worried. Whole area around my ear has swollen and is hurting me even more despite painkillers, I've taken 12 painkillers today because I HAD to. Too much pain. I've also just taken 2 sleeping tablets that'll hopefully knock me out. Mam just had a look at it and is worried so to the doctor first thing in the morning......:(

    Make me happy :(

Don't take 12 painkillers and 2 sleeping tablets in a day mate! I know it hurts!

The doctor will give you an antibiotic and you'll be sorted in a few days, don't worry!

Yeah, I'm watching some George Carlin stand up stuff trying to be positive, dang funny but I'm afraid to laugh due to pain :(

I don't feel ill from the painkillers though, just relief.

    Carlin rocks.

Check out some Stephen Lynch videos on j00Tube:

He sings comedy songs, utter class. The Special Olympics song is his best.

Also check out tv-links.co.uk, you can watch most shows that are on TV, by streaming them online! Look at Louis Theroux's documentaries:

Earaches ftl. I've a high pain tolerance for such a small, petty man, but an earache was the only thing that ever brought me near to tears.

RIGHT. Went to doctors early in the morning and he told me to go to the Ear & Eye Hospital in town immediately......got there and waited. Kept on falling asleep every now and then due to dizziness in the head. About 4 hours later I get seen by a doctor who stuck a mini Dyson hover in my ear that was painful/relieving, then stuffed a load of cotton crap in my ear and prescribed me some REAL painkillers, finally. What I had was TWO separate ear infections in the one ear. No wonder it hurt! I had one inside doing the constant pounding of pain and the one outside obviously admiring his work and causing all the head pains/pressure/dizziness/swelling. So now I'm home and waiting for someone to kindly drive to the chemist to get me this stuff so I can watch some George Carlin and Louis Theroux with a cocktail of drugs in me!
