First flight : Transatlantic route opens from Knock
    From The Irish Independent
    Monday, 28th May, 2007

KNOCK Airport yesterday waved off its first transatlantic flight. It was a far cry from the airport's humble beginnings as a gateway for visitors to the Marian shrine.

Ireland West Airport Knock, as the airport is now known, described the departure of the flyglobespan flight to New York was a "significant milestone". Knock chairman Joe Kennedy said he was "delighted" that the service had come to the airport.

"The hereditary and cultural ties between the north east coast of America and the West and North West of Ireland are very strong," he said.

Flyglobespan offers three weekly flights from Knock to New York as well as two weekly flights from Knock to Boston.

Aengus McMahon's picture of Lady Liberty was taken at Knock airport yesterday just before the flight left for America.
