I have started to encode stuff in x264 for my media centre and am using he-aac for the audio. I have read about 5.1 he-aac audio and I am just wondering how you actually get the surround sound? Cant seem to find anything about it googling, is their any receivers that actually output surround sound from he-aac files?

I doubt it. Your HTPC should just decode the audio just like an mp3 and provide PCM audio through your SPDIF port.

do you know of any audio decoder that outputs it through spdif, mpa audio decoder works fine for me with ac3 but its not giving surround sound with a 5.1 he-aac file.

Never tried this out myself so not sure but have you tried AAC-LC 5.1 instead as I found at least one Google reference that might work (if passing through SPDIF).

How is it setup to the surround sound system through analogue or digital connections ?

Have a creative live 24bit external usb connected to pc and then a optical cable going from this to dvd player (which has optical in). Only have he-aac 5.1 atm. The creative usb card shouldnt be giving me surround sound with vista as far as I know............but it seems to be workng fine. As xvids, dvds and dvb-s stuff with ac3 sound are outputting at 5.1 according to the dvd player, and definitely are when I check the speakers.

your dvd player wont decode anything other than doldy digital (ac3) or stereo (pcm) and ppossibly dts (dts) if its higher end.

your creative isnt decoding surroung sound, its passing it to the dvd player - which worled in vista last time i checked.

youll need to get the sound card to decode the he-aac and pass it to the dvd player as pcm.
