I have just purchased a usb portable hard disc drive. I thought it would be easy enough to use but its not working. Any advice?

It has two usb connectors at the end of the lead and I have plugged these in to the back of the computer and connected the other part of the cable in tto the usb portable hard disc unit.

    I am using windows XP

Is there a power supply with it? What is the make/model of the drive? It should just pop up when the computer starts that it has been detected and show up under My Computer.

Two USB connectors at the end of the lead? What's with that?
Have you tried connecting just one of them?

Sounds like it's a 2.5" caddy. There are supposed to be two USB cables. One for power from the USB hub, the other is for the transfer of the data.

Is it being recognised as an HDD in Disk Management?

Right click My Computer > Manage > Disk Management (listed under storage)

If it is recognised by Windows, it will be listed in the top or bottom right section of the window. Labeled something like "Disk 2". It will say what type of formatting is on it if any. If it isn't formatted or partitioned, then that is where your problem lies.

Well there you go, you learn something new every day, I never used a 2.5" caddy so didn't know about the two USB connections.

Actually, they draw power from both connectors simultaneously, as the current drain requirements are higher than what could be drawn from just one USB connector. Only one is used for data transfer though.
