The Where / What Are You Thread...

Just thought I'd stick up a thread here to find out who we have here.

If you are involved in the radio broadcasting industry or if you are studying radio broadcasting in college then please post here and tell us a bit about yourself and what your areas of interest is.

As for myself... Community Radio is my background and I'm on the management team of a Dublin based radio station that has been running for over 10 years.

Our station has branched out from radio into television and IT and I am heavily involved in that end of the organisation.

I used to have a radio programme on the station, but these days I find I simply haven't the time. But I really would like to get back in the saddle at some stage this year.

I've studied Radio Broadcasting both at Ballyfermot and Dun Laoghaire.

I was also the chair of The Community Radio Forum (Now called Craol) for a while.

My area of interest in radio really is drama. I wrote and produced several radio plays when I was in college and my final project was a musical. I also enjoy documentary production.

Emerald Radio... that's the Ballyfermot student station, isn't it?

Have you seen the new studios in the Northside Civic Centre then? I can't quite remember exactly which year we moved into them.

I also work in Community Radio. I presented/produced and researched Good Morning Dublin (a current affairs show) on Anna Livia, twice a week from July to November of 2005.

I've also been working in Dublin South FM since June of 2005. There I'm part of the news team but I also help to put together Community Voice which is a programme that goes out twice a week, made up of interviews of things that try to be relevant to the community we cover.

I also do some tech work for other people in both stations as I am a sound engineer by trade, and they're always looking for people to man the desk. :)

Studying Radio in Ballyfermot doing the hnd in media (radio).

Did a general media course last year and as well, had a breakfast show in Anna Livia (Colm 'n' Fry) and I'm working in Today FM now doing research.

Also did some work with "Pet Sounds" in Today FM.

We just finished the first year student radio station a few weeks back. More Radio 97.3. Was a great laugh altogether.

I'd recommend Ballyer to anyone trying to get into broadcasting.

Its regarded alot more than Dun Laoighre or Dhulaigh because it's far more "hands on" if ya get me.

    kn0x.

Well, a friend of mine also in the class got work experience on Ray D'Arcys show. They kept him on and eventually got offered a place in research and other little odd jobs such as promotions. I got into research when he was asked to see if there were any other people available.

So basically it would be best to try get a weeks w.e. in somewhere or some show and if they like you they will generally keep you on somewhere.

Today FM is very like that and the people there are so cool and look after each other really well.

Oh and this probably only applies to college work experience for younger readers of this post. But, sure stranger things have happened! :D

Hi, I'm Niall and I produce/present the Wall Of Sound radio show on Friday nights (7 to 10pm) on local community radio station Dundalk FM 100.

It's full of comedy, fresh music, interviews, entertainment news, gig info and a bit more comedy thrown in for good measure. Plus we've a different Top Ten every week - ranging from the Top Ten Acts at Oxegen 2006 to the Top Ten Summer Songs of All Time and The Top Ten Actors that Became Singers, and loads more besides.

    Radio is fun! \o/

    Mostly I just love radio...

Wired FM (student/community radio in Limerick)

Flirt FM (student/community radio in Galway)

General newsroom lackey/Work Placement. Live95fm in Limerick

Currently almost finished a short contract in Lyric fm. (production co-ordinator)

I did the Ard-Dioplóma i gCumarsáid Fheidhmeach (Raidió agus Teilifís) in NUIG last year. Good craic. Everyone else in the course was more into the television side, which I also like, but it left me a bit short in what I could do in radio... majority rules and all that.

not working in radio full time anymore, but have oodles of experience.

started out as sound op and worked as a researcher, reader, producer and presenter for newstalk. was a producer/presenter in rte for just over two years. have worked for the bbc and have appeared on a bunch of radio stations in the states and southern hemisphere as a guest/pundit.

am now running my own production company - still doing bits and bobs on radio, but have other fish to fry, so don't get to do as much as I'd like.

You fail to mention your exshellent behind the scenes efforts, young man!

    Mine (oldest-present)

NearFM (6 years solidly starting when I was 15) (I definitely remember taking two weeks off for the leaving cert though...)
DIT College radio and other temporary licences whenever they arose
Phantom FM (back in the day) (1 year-ish)
Today FM (on and off for a year or so...)
    Spin 1038 (1.5 years solid)
Phantom 105.2 - since start up (Oct 06)

But eh, they're not all back to back, lots of them overlap. I just realised that list makes me sound about 35! Jaysus... (not that there's anything wrong with being 35, like. But yknow. Eh, yeah. I'm gonna go now.)

Hey everyone, I'm new to boards.ie and just wanted to introduce myself, figured here would be as good as place as any seein as radio is my main passion.

I'm 18, been working in Raidió na Life 106.4fm since october 2005 presenting the stations drive time show on tuesday afternoons. Stopped it at christmas to learn more about the technical side of radio, doing editing etc. Then in April i started a new show called "An Clár bán-dearg" on the station. It's on Fridays @ 7pm.

Was doing computer applications in DCU but dropped out as i had no idea why i was even there! lol. So am hoping to go back to DCU in sept to do gnó & gaeilge then maybe a post-grad in media or something

    That's me! :)
