Lima to Buenos Aires ?

    Hi!

I'm off to South America in December, and am hoping some of you can offer advice.

I'm planning a 2 month trip, flying into Lima and out of Buenos Aires - I am definitely going to do the Inca trail and see the Salt Flats but haven't made any further plans.

Has anyone traveled this route (overland through Bolivia) ? Do you recommend it? What would you consider a 'must-do' on this route? What is the quality of the public transport like? Are internal flights an option? I hear they're rather pricey in Bolivia ...

Any suggestions/recommendations are much appreciated! :)

Inca trail is a waste of time (and especially money) IMO - just walk/hitch up the back road to Machu Picchu -but other spots I would recommend are
    - Arequipa (Per)
    - Huacachina (Per)
    - La Paz (Bol)
    - The pampa and jungle around Rurrenabaque (Bol)
    - Potosi (Bol)
    - Sucre (Bol)
    - Iguazu falls (Arg)
    - Purmamarca (Arg)
    - Colonia (Uru)

The only internal flight worth considering is the one from La Paz to the jungle, 50 euro each way. Buses are very frequent and go all over the place. In pretty bad nick in Peru/Bolivia, sublime in Argentina, very very cheap everywhere.

I don't agree with that! Its an experience! if you trek up the back roads you miss out on the whole trekking bit which is what i enjoyed most...the back path isn't the same i've been on it!

I did that same route only i' started in buenos aires...

My favourite spots were isla tranquila on titticaca and san pedro de attacama!!! I love that place sepecially the geyzers....swimming in hotsprings up in the ice caps tops anything else i did!

Also did surfing in some of the towns along the coast of chile before you get to san pedro!

I missed the falls iguazu and i'm going back in september,...its first on my list.

Other than that i love tiwanacu in bolivia and spent way too much time living it up in cusco....just don't get stuck there or you wont have time for the rest of your trip....best advise...set a time limit for lima,...don't waste your time....buenos aires is worth saving a few days for!

I'm heading over there in two weeks and have done quite a bit of research on the place. From the sounds of it, internal flights aren't really necessary with the great bus system, although the ones in Bolivia sound scary.
The best way I found to find out about places is reading people's blogs. One guy http://www.conorgrennan.net/ has a really funny one and he details his South America trip pretty well.
    Have fun!
