Hello all, I have just built a friend a new HTPC with the following spec........

    4 x Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 500GB SATA2 16MB 7200RPM

    2Gb of ram

    Intel Core 2 Duo E6600

    Asus P5W DH Deluxe

    Gainward GeForce 8600GTS 256MB GDDR3

    Vista Home Premium

DVI to HDMI cable running to a Sony KDL-40X2000 1080p HDTV

All the hardware is working fine but I am having a few problems with the graphics card.

I have the latest drivers installed and when I open the NVIDIA control panel and go to the scaling section it doesn’t display the correct native resolution, it says the native res for the TV is something like 740 x 6xx, as a result it the TV wont up-scale any content playing through the PC. The PC is running at 1920 x 1080 and looks perfect but when I choose the option for letting NVIDIA upscale and apply it, it then just goes back to the default and I cant work out why.

This was not going to be a problem as I had intended using NVIDIA PureVideo software to upscale everything not in 1080p, I installed PureVideo but its not working............when I go to set it up in Media Centre it tells me I should play some video while setting up, which I am but it cant seem to see it for some reason.

Any help would be great guys......

NVIDIA's drivers are still flaky outside of games under Vista.

Not sure what can be done about the scaling problem if NVIDIA's own driver is refusing to work, I have noticed that both ATI & NVIDIA seem have to have problems reading the EDID from TV's under Vista so it is not an isolated issue. However under ATI you can disable read EDID data and force whatever resolution you want.

In the NVIDIA control panel\video & television\change the signal or HD format what options do you have e.g
    Non-HDTV format
    720p HDTV format
    1080p HDTV format

If the non is select try the 1080 or if the 1080 is already selected try the non-HDTV format.

Last but not least Powerstrip offers all sorts of control over the display settings what you could try is to generate a driver inf from it so Windows does not rely on the generic PnP driver for the display.

As for Purevideo NVIDIA never updated it to work properly on Vista so it is not set as the default decoder when installed you have to use a utility to change the setting so it will then work.

Scaling , overscan and underscan issues are still a problem with the latest nvidia drivers for Vista , these issues are still listed in the release notes , Nvidias own forums are awash with questions about this , and the utility that helps with this are not present like they were in XP , drivers are promised this month and the next set are supposed to fix the display issues ,

For now though , have you tried the component connection ? It worked for me , picture is not as clear but you get the proper scaling !
