Ebay sales tax?

I was off ebay for a while but have returned in the lat week, i have made two purchases and have been charged a 'sales tax' on both purchases. what is this and how long has it been goin on? is there certain things which have it or is it for everything? thanks

Were you buying from US based sellers? If so, different states have different sales tax rates and that may be applied if the seller is a registered business seller.

eBay itself doesn't charge any tax.

I have never paid a sales tax and I have bought from American sellers numerous times
