Where is Greenpeace Ireland?

Following some not very deep searching it seems that Greenpeace currently has no presence in Ireland but did previously.

Was anyone here involved or in a position to shed some light on why we have no Greenpeace operation here?

They pulled out about 8 years ago due to lack of funding/interest...

There's a chance for ya! Set it up yourself! It is probably because we don't tend to have as many visual disasters eg beating seals to death, but Shell to Sea is the nearest we have right now.

Well yes, it's something I'm looking in to. I was honestly shocked to see that the majority of EU countries have a Greenpeace base whereas ourselves who are supposedly advanced as eco-awareness goes have no representation.

I have been in touch with Greenpeace international to ask for further details regarding their Irish presence.

Any body else here interested in persuing this?

I was in Greenpeace here, a long time ago. Think a lot of people from back then kind of morphed into the early Green Party but, certainly, there was little or no support overall at the time.

I think traditionally Ireland has an exploitive attitude to the environment which still holds true for much of, in particular, the farming community, resulting in little or no active support for an environmental action lobby like GreenPeace. It's only with pressure from the EU, and grants and hard cash, that we've seen some progress on environmental issues - at a grass roots level, I think people would rape this land and bleed it to death really :(

    Hi there,

Greenpeace Ireland pulled out of Ireland in 1997 and people working there set up VOICE of Irish Concern for the Enviornment which lobbies on waste, water quality and fluoridation issues and is involved in climate change issues also. It's a very small organisation based in 9 Upper Mount Street in Dublin.

Do you have an interest in joining or volunteering? If anyone does please PM me.

    Thanks

The Greenpeace Ireland branch was closed when the new director for Greenpeace stepped in in 2001. He decided to close down several divisions, smaller ones, of Greenpeace internationally in order to make cut backs. I think the branches were making losses.

Concerning the big 3 (Greenpeace, Friends of the Earth, World Wildlife Fund) Friends of the Earth in Ireland has relatively recently been set up, about 2 years ago I think.
    See www.foe.ie

There are also various groups accross the country tackling local, National and International environmental problems such as GRIAN and VOICE as already mentioned.

    Hi Dicebar,

Yes Greenpeace pulled out in 1997 and the people working there set up VOICE. VOICE is based in same office as FOE. Check out www.voiceireland.org for info or PM me.

    Thanks

Greenpeace is so 1990s. Check out Friends of the Earth.

GreenPeace has been very supportive of the Shell to Sea campaign. Many people don't believe that lobbying is the only way to make a difference, and there's a place for more direct activism.

Obviously, Shell to Sea is a single issue organisation, but it may be useful to think in terms of what should happen in the future regarding environmental activism in Ireland.

Please keep us informed of Green Peace related activities.
