    Classic Cars Clean Up
I think there are possibly too many stickies in this forum* - do others agree? Can any be de-stickified?
I'm going to draw up a charter for this forum also along the lines of the one in the motors forum (Motors Charter & FAQs - Read before going further). Thoughts?

Im also drawn to the recent phenomen of the classics forum becoming more like a chat room. Is this the route people want it to become? If you prefer, then PM me.

Any other thoughts about making this forum better?
    K.
    * I do understand the irony of creating a sticky moaning about sitckies! :D

I think it great as it is tbh, everything's covered, unless you want to add in a sticky for classic hearses.:)

    Some thoughts on the stickies;

We need to add one at least-the charter-whether folk will read it or not.

How about merging Museums with Clubs and Websites, and dropping Useful Links?

The rest are handy enough and should be retained IMO.

As regards the chat issue, it was fine until a couple of individuals started doing it wholesale in my opinion. A bit of banter was always good for this forum, but a big in joke spread all over the place by four or five indivuduals and their dual accounts isn't the way forward.

If others feel differently to me, I'll just have to live with it. I won't be posting outside of this sticky in the forum anyway while all the aggro continues...

I would love to see a few stickies combined. Save all that scrolling to get to the good stuff.

Although the Luke & Bo Duke style of posting wrecks my head, I don't see why the board can't continue as it is. Okay, if a genuine enquiry gets swamped by yank tank banter that's not on - but once large threads as started by the americanos are self contained then, what the heck, its a free world.

Nothing that goes on here is going to put new users off, other than a static forum.

    Just my 2¢.

FWIW I think the stickies on things like suppliers etc are great in theory but not so hot in practice.

I used the suppliers one to get a contact number for a garage only to find out that the owner had been dead for 6 months! As the posts get older the info gets more and more out of date. Also there are so many posts that you're not going to page through hundreds on teh offchance of finding one that is relevant. Is it possible to have some sort of a dynamic table that could be updated rather than a thread?

Also the photo threads could probably be merged - do we need a thread for spotted classics and abandonded classics?

Lastly would we be better with a full & seperate FAQ (as in not linked to the charter)? For example the insurance thread sticky (and associated ordinary threads) usually cover the same ground (cars less than 30, young drivers, 2nd car, brokers, etc). We could put that into an FAQ (along with links and contacts?)

    Just some thoughts!

I think the motors forum sticky is the best way to go, although it will require more of the mod's time. It's good to keep the chatter out of those type of threads though.

The format of the "essential free software" sticky in the computers forum is great.

Certainly, getting down from 10 or so stickies (as of last Friday) would be handy.

    Edit:

I'd say a proper contact database type thing would be a major hack. Like I said, the approach will require a bit more work from the mods, but they don't seem to mind that. If someone comes across a dead link, phone number or whatever, then if they PM the mod, it can be removed from the sticky.

I'd say you could categorise the links like "Suppliers / Mechanics / Museums / Books / etc etc", and have a different post in the thread for each section. We are taking this approach in the Greystones / Charlesland forum for "handy links & numbers".

That would probably replace the need for a good few of the stickies.

in your own words Stir, stir, stir. IMO.

now I'm not going to have a big long drawnout argument over this.Lets get that out of the way. Dont want to get banned for speaking my mind. As this seems to be a trend around here.

But if you had not gone in on that thread with that short but very negative statement that you made... that whole situation would not have happened IMO.
as a result of you doing that somebody got banned and haven't spoken to that individual the reason for his ban was fictional IMO.
has anybody actually read that thread correctly to see what started that whole situation off.
it seems to me somebody else should have also been disciplined But for one reason or another they were not.
kind of makes you wonder don't you think.

that's all I have to say just need to get that off my chest up front and out in the open.

Nice move to ask the users, kbannon! Democracy on boards.ie :D

I let go of a few stickies over the weekend, but was afraid to hurt some people (=mike65) by taking out more ;)

The "clean" combined sticky in the motors forum works very well imho. If we can do that here as well, I've no problem spending a bit more time maintaining it
Dont want to get banned for speaking my mind

    Eh?

    WTF?

I presume you mean the site bannings of 454-TA and R.S.D? That was one person using two different accounts to login to boards.ie, something that is frowned upon by the owners of boards.ie to put it mildly...

    You presume correctly.

While it may be frowned upon how many users on here only have one account?? Few I say.if everyone was to be totally honest.

Like I said if you actually read true that thread and take the time to analyse it you will see the reason for the user name change and it certainly was not done to abuse a member. why don't you just humour me and give it the once over see what conclusion you come to.
I realise this may be a futile exercise afterall the damage is done.
I just feel somebody was far to quick off the mark and a gross miss justice was done and I'm not a alone on this but i seem to be the only one willing to speak up.
what's right is right and what's wrong is wrong.

I thought that I was the only one that felt like that! I used to post the odd time, but in recent months the classic car section has spiraled into in-jokes, conversations about stuff that happened to people I don't know, references to hangovers, bad punctuation and some completly unintelligible English, its more like a 11 year old, girls chat room. :(

However I've noticed it getting better, there are less one line posts, and the tech stuff is coming back in again, I came here to see how other people get on with whatever type of classic they have, get help and help people out, so now that the summers coming back in, we'll see more of that and less of:

"Bob, I'll bring the beer, unlike the last time, when u forgot the seats :D;) !!!!1!one! remeber what we did.........hey!"

Its a pity we can't have a classics for sale / wanted section and same for classic car parts / services etc.

Same again then for ordinary motors in the motors section.

Have you asked about a classic car section on adverts.ie?
