Definitely not in Dublin anyway! I was trading in a 98 Mk4 2 years ago and Michael Moore down in Portarlington gave me 2 grand more on the trade in than any dealer in Dublin. He also threw in spot lights on the car which is about €200 extra, I do believe.

Country dealers tend to have less overheads than their Dublin counterparts so can decrease their profit margins. I'd say ring some of the country dealers.

EDIT: I had also tried a few dealers in Cork, Galway and Donegal (furthest counties from Dublin) and none of the could beat Micheal Moores

I was quoted 2K off a new Sportline 1.4 5 door over the phone by Ballsbridge Motors about 6 weeks ago without trying too hard - I was checking colour availability. From what I remember, there was a choice of silver and blue at the time. I was enquiring on behalf of a work colleague who's convinced that a man's voice will get better results from salesmen  .

By any chance do you know the name of the guy you were talking to? 2k sounds good off a 22k car :)

As I keep saying on boards.ie nothing is confirmed yet. Even if a new model is out in 12 months a right hand drive won't be out until the following 12 months - such is the way VW operate. Also VW are rumored to be reducing the build quality to bring it inline price wise with it's competitors. The independent rear suspension is also rumored to be going. It's been no secret that the latest Golf costs a damn fortune to build.

I wasn't saying there'd be a 12 month delay, I was talking about the 12 months which follow the left hand drive release. Maybe I should have added a 'during' in there!

Mk5 left hand drive available November 2003.
    Mk5 right hand drive available July/August 2004.

They will probably simplify the shell and reduce the amount of fabrication and welding.

As for getting rid of the independent rear suspension, ford seem to be able to turn a profit on the focus, and also, unlike VW, actually developed the system themselves. They might be like toyota with the auris and make half decent handling an "optional extra".

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,520 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

nobody's gone for the "optional extra" handling model on the Auris (it's not even on Toyota's website) Wouldn't mind a drive in it at some stage, probably have to go to the UK.

So lets get back to the point.
Looking for a 2007, black ,5dr, sportsline, wheres the best and cheapest place anywhere in ireland. Have been quoted approx 24k list and 2k discount so asking price is just above 22k.Still abit steep in my opinion.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,588 ✭✭✭Bluetonic

Are there any extras aside from the book price to go on it? Metallic paint (500 euro).... etc..?

I've no idea - I had a quick look at their website for a staff listing but there's none there....

My sister traded her '05 Sportline for the same again earlier this year and reckons that the new one is far better than her old one in terms of 'feel' - I've no idea if there's been much tweaking but she's not the type to have imagined it. Then again, her old one could have been a lemon. The standard air con is a big plus on the '07.

Newcastle West Motors in Limerick are supposed to be decent enough. Also try Pierse Motors in Tipperary.

Regarding the next Golf, the MkVI is not due for a bit yet but the MkV is getting a small facelift in the mean time. It is getting the same front bumper as the Jetta and a chrome grill similar to the R32. They are also lauching an estate version. Not sure on dates though but it is pretty soon.

Have bought from M.Moore Portarlington since 98 and always Golf's. He always had one when in Dublin there was 6months waiting list. Last time I went down to him one of his salesmen collected me at the train station and drove me to his car dealership.,suppose wouldn't you if there was a customer coming down with 22k in his arse pocket....

The longest I had to wait for a car from M.Moore was 3weeks. Make sure he has the tank filled to brim when collecting car. I have always sold my car private because always got a better deal with cash than a trade in.

Why don't you shop around? When you will get the best price depends on lots of factors, and where one person may do well another may not. Take a few saturdays to visit a few dealerships.

Fair enough. When we bought a Passat last year Blackwater Motors in Fermoy were several k cheaper than Newmarket Motors or (unsurprisingly) than Turners Cross.

What on earth is this supposed to mean? In case you misunderstood my post, I was pointing out that VW have already 'reduced the build quality' of the MK5 Golf compared to the Mk4. And that of the Mk3 compared to the Mk2, if it comes to it. Are you with me now, 'lad'?;)

I might be completely wrong here, but over the last few years I got the impression that the MK5 was miles (or should I say kilometers :D) ahead of the MK4 in every respect, including built quality. In the case of the GTI I'd go as far as to say it's the first good one since the MK2 (didn't you own one of them?)

I also got the impression that the production costs of the MK5 are too high and that the MK6 will be built cheaper. I'm speculating now, but I'll guess the MK6 won't be a good car, where the MK5 clearly is a good car :(

If VW are a bit more clever about how they build the Mk6 Golf, it could be easier to produce and less likely to go wrong. as long as they spend all their time on the dash plastics and the rear suspension, then the motoring press won't notice anything's amiss

I've only driven the Mk5 briefly, whereas i've driven a fair few Mk4s. I would have said that the Mk5, better car though it surely is, feels a lot less well put-together than the Mk4. The same holds true of the new Passat - I sat in one of those a while back and was quite shocked at how cheap the interior feels compared to its predecessor. That's only my own impression, but I have to say it's quite a marked one.:) You're right, I did have a Mk2 GTI 16v. Great car though it was, I could never really forgive it for not being a Peugeot 205GTI 1.9. I guess build quality was never that high on my wish list..

    Drdre,

To answer your original question - you should phone or call into at least a dozen dealers and ask what discount they offer. If they offer less than 10% off the list price you are being ripped off! 10% is the absolute minimum - some dealers will give upto 15%.

Don't forget the after sales aspect when it comes to buying a VW. Best in the country in this regard in Newcastle West Autos. Worst is Frank Hogans (Western are almost as bad). Steer clear of all MSL set ups. Al Hayes, yeah, cheap, but useless for repairs. Newmarket will swing a deal but Blackwater have a better aftersales set up. In Dublin, I'd try Fosters or maybe give Sheehys in Naas a go.

I've had two MK IVs and had a MK V for the last three years. The build quality of the MKV is inferior to MKIV but the handeling is much better.

The independent rear suspension makes the car feel alot more stable when cornering. I will be switching from VW to ford if they degrade the handeling on the MKVI.

I have always called to a number of dealers when upgrading my car. The prices quoted were usually fairly consistant give or take 100 euros. I have always bought the base line spec. There is probably more room for bargaining when getting extras included.

Holy CR*P! Who the hell are you buying VW's off Zagokagirl?

Not since the heady days of the Mk4 Golf have we seen VW discounts anywhere close to 10% - most dealers don't have 10% margin to play with yet alone 15%.

If you can squeeze 5% out of a dealer in a private sale, you'd be doing a great bit of business.
