Just dicking around with a ps3 here, & wondering what is the easiest way to watch/transfer downloaded content like tv shows? Tried putting them on a usb stick but it didnt read that there was any video files on there.

Dont tell me you have to install linux to do it?

haven't tried it but afaik you have to put the video files (in the correct format remember) on your USB flash drive, cd-rom or whatever in a folder called "video", then go to "Video" on the xmb and it'll copy the files over for you...

also, this might be of use to you

Yeah I had a google around & came across that site & a few like it. It seems like the videos have to be converted to a format the ps3 is familiar with & it doesnt just play the average downloaded divx avi. Bit of a gyp, Im used to using the orig xbox as my media player & that does a much better job. Kinda dissapointed.

If the video is on your PC, you might want to try something like Nero MediaHome to stream them to your PS3. I've been able to stream and playback divx avis using that..it transcodes them to a format the PS3 can play, on the fly. It might have trouble with HD video, though..you'd need a powerful PC to transcode HD stuff in realtime.

Is this the program you got?

    http://www.nero.com//eng/Nero_7_Premium_InfoPage.html

Seems a bit steep for €60, did you find anywhere to get it cheaper?

I'd no longer recommend nerohome - TVersity now works better, for me at least. They updated to support PS3 better, and it works very well. I can play back 720p divx avis and more with it now.

does ps3 support divx avi's out of the box or do they have to be converted? i haven't tried any hi-def stuff on the ps3 via mediahome yet (just invader zim episodes thus far :D). i'm getting a new 500GB hard disk for the PC for media and stuff so setting up a media center will turn this house into an uber leet home!

Yea ps3 only plays mpegs at the moment, and certain encoded mpegs at that, but have a close look at the PS3 site, it does say watch this space for video compatabilty, any one using a mac and want a good program for converting perfectly for PS3 get a program called "isquint" its meant for ipods but just crank up the output quality and bam you have those former pc bound videos in glorious tv :D
