Has anyone a method of finding drivers for applications under vista.
I've photoshop elements that won't even install ,adobe don't even mention vista.

Or alternatively ,can anyone recommend a photo editor thats not too pricey?

Applications don't need drivers: devices do.
What is the error you are getting installing PS Elements? There's some information in the Adobe Technote site that might help.

I remember Leinsterman sayiing something similar when he installed Lightroom a few days back and it wouldnt work properly. He said he had to change a setting to enable it to work but again I cant remembe what it is.

Sorry for the somewhat useless reply but hopefully he will see tis and explain it in more detail.

The setup executable of the disk is not loading. It starts to run and then dies while being processed.
It doesn't give a warning about confliction or anything ,so I can't see it working without a file or driver pre loaded.

I'm not in an emergency or anything ,I haven't been using any photo apps for a while .I don't mind handing cash over ,but I can't afford lightroom at the moment:o

Could it be something to do with the fact that Vista's administrative account doesn't have administrative access? I know it pops up warnings, but it can cause things to fail.
You can enable it via command line or drill through the menus from the Control Panel.

Thanks ,I'll check it out . I've installed canon zoombrowser and stuff already, not sure if that makes any difference?

I've also just ordered more ram and a Gfx card, I've only 1Gb and on board grafx.

Seeing as you can install other programs I doubt that is the problem. Try download a trial version and install that instead.

I will give that a go ,so adobe would probably be the one to stick with ?
I looked up gimp ,but it doesn't seem to support vista.

Looks like it's back to school for a while ,

    Brian.

Right click on the executable or shortcut, and try using the "run as administrator" option in the menu. If that doesn't work, right click it, go to properties and click the compatibility tab and set it to run in XP SP2 compatibility mode. That gets anything I have problems with working fine on Vista.

Also, I can confirm that Gimp 2.2 for Windows works fine in Vista.

Thanks for that stephen ,I'll get gimp so and run the xp mode aswell.

    Cheers,
    Brian.

EDIT : Good man stephen ,I've gotten photoshop working with the XP SP2 compat. ,windows says that it has known issues ,but it loaded up without freezing . That will do me :)
Got gimp up and running also ;)

Brian , this happens with a lot of installations in Vista , it varies depending on the program but it all depends on what the installer tries to do ,
there are two approaches to fixing or getting around it ,

1: go into security centre in the control panel and turn UAC off , this will stop any error messages on installation. Turn it back on when the install is complete.

2: navigate to the installer , right click on the .exe file , ( if you dont have extensions visible in the list the exe will be described as an application. ) and choose " run as administrator " , it will then ask for your password and will install normally after that ,
I have Elements working fine , thats all you have to do.

Thanks mathias ,I never put a password in for myself ,so theres none  .
I never really got into XP in a big way ,but I think with this vista it's actually worth getting it right.
Very easy to appreciate media with it :)

I went and ordered more ram ,from the crucial.com site you mentioned before .
It scanned my computer and recommended ram at CL4. But I went to the longer list of recommendations and opted for one thats CL5. I'm not sure what the difference is.
My machine was suppose to have 1GB of 533MHZ ,but the bios has the ram at 667MHZ.

I ordered a X1300 graphics card from crucial ,I presume that will do for windows etc.
Altogether I got 2GB or ram and the X1300 card for 150 ,incl UPS tracked

    Laters ,
    Brian.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,332 ✭✭✭311

Sorry if this thread has offended and not met the forum charter.

The Tech forums are very helpful ,it's just people that would reply that I am familiar with would post here.

I won't be posting anymore about it ,thanks for the help.

M'eh I just think this is a computer app installation thread, not a photography thread.
If I was a film purist, I would kick up some serious **** ;)
