I will start in a Big 4 firm in September. I was wondering what the average starting salary is like, and by how much it increases over the 3.5 years. Thanks for your help.

this year i'd imagine it will be

    yr1: 23 [junior]
    yr2: 28 [semi-sen]
    yr3: 33 [sen, greater depending qual/non]
    yr4: depending [qual/non]

    If you start in 2007:

    Sept 07 - 22000 - 24000
    Sept 08 - 28000 - 30000
    Sept 09 - 34000 - 36000
    Sept 10 - 40000 - 42000
    April 11 - 48000 - 50000

That's a fairly rough estimate and will depend on if you work in Dublin or a regional office (Subtract about 10%), which of the Big 4 you work for, and how your performance reviews go. It also depends on what exams you have done - these figures are on the assumption you start on Prof 3 and don't fail anything :)

This assumption is basically built on anecdotal evidence, but I know for a fact that if you were a qualified senior (3.5 yrs done) now, you should be on approximately €45,000.

And how does it work out further on down the line? I mean....once the pain of training has passed, are there decent salaries on offer?
I have consulted people on this, and have been given differing answers, so I would like to get the wisdom of the board.

Well, as mentioned above you'd be on €50k after year 3. What do you consider as decent?

50k is decent, no doubt. But I guess my question is more aimed at the 5 or 10 year mark. I am also interested in how ones career may develop after ACA qualification. My motivations for getting into this field are that I liked the subject in college, and that I saw that it could take me in several different directions. My question regarding renumeration is probably more of a question about how renumneration relates to seniorty and/or career development.

If you've got to the stage where a big four are shelling out €50k on you then you know your stuff. From there on the only limits on your earning is your ability. If you're good then you can look forward to mega bucks, if not you'll be found out (industry) sharpish. But, as I said above, if you get to the stage where a big four have enough faith in you to pay you €50k per annum then you probably have what it takes. But, I'd concentrate on getting to the start of year three first! ;)
