Going flying to Beijing on Wed then HK on Tues and have all the important stuff done. So just checking here for any last minute general travel advice. Like it's gonna be roasting  over there now so what's a good sun lotion and insect repelant to get? Also any other areas in China and HK, besides the obvious, that I should try and make a note to do or see? Many thanks in advance!

Make sure to avoid the touristy restaurants/hotels in Beijing and go to the places that are full of locals, even if they have sticky floors and plastic furniture! The food is fantastic and very cheap! If you don't read Mandarin, its perfectly okay to point :)

If you're going to visit the great wall, do NOT visit Badaling where all the tour groups go, its like the disney world version - we did a fantastic 10 km trek from a place called Jinshangling to Simatai - plenty of hostels etc will organise a bus there and back for about 10 euro in total, its a fantastic place to see the wall and if you're lucky, you'll be the only group there!

    Have a great time!

looks like you're gonna be here for the 18th anniversary of the tiananmen crackdown. there will be nothing said of it on the mainland but there will be a vigil here in HK on June 4 - well worth attending if you're still in town.

with regard to weather, it's gonna be up in the mid 30's most week. the air in beijing is really dry - every time i go there i have to bring alot of moisturiser, so i'd recommend that.

i wouldnt worry too much about mossies, just bring some organic repellent (some of the stuff they sell here is pretty harsh on the skin)
