bizzare slowdown

So, I don't know if I have some kind of virus or not, but the other night my laptop did a strange thing during a torrent download. All of a sudden, the mail component of AVG said that it was trying to do a POP3 communication with a server in ??.??.za and since then it's been ridiculously slow.

As far as security goes, it's updated and genuine XP, with kerio and AVG free on the wall. gets all good marks at grc, but the slowdown is bizzare. It has half a gig and about 30% free HD, nothing big on the desktop. I ran hijack this and it all looks fine, but I'm no expert.

It's because of the strange behaviour of the AVG mail thing that I'm posting on this board - I use webmail at home, so normally that little box over the system tray never pops up. Any ideas?

have you tried to disable the email scanner component to eliminate it from the equation?
Go to the AVG control center, select the scanner componemt and go to its properties and select disable plugin.

but you'll need to get it working again.
Maybe a reinstall of AVG might be the easiest way.
