'Destination of the Week' proposal/discussion thread

Was just in conversation with Buffybot about this, who gave me the go ahead to post this to see if people would be interested.

My suggestion is based around what John and other mods do o'er in the music fora - as an example, see the Alternative & Indie forum.

What would happen would be there would be one thread with the 'Suggestions for the DOTW' placed therein, with another thread created weekly / however frequently people want with information about random locations. What would happen then is that once the destination has basic information on it, people would add their comments as they normally do, such as "ah yeah, if you're going to Y a good spot to rent is in X" or "if you're in W, make sure to see Z" etc.

The possibly benefits of this would include more people viewing the forum to see which area is described, as well as getting more contributors to the forum. So, for example, if Venice, Italy was chosen, the thread would proceed something like this...

Introduction: Venice (Venetian: Venezsia, Italian: Venezia, Latin: Venetia) is a city in northern Italy, the capital of region Veneto, and has a population of 271,663 (census estimate January 1, 2004). Together with Padua (Padova), the city is included in the Padua-Venice Metropolitan Area (population 1,600,000). Venice's nicknames include "Queen of the Adriatic", "City of Water", "City of Bridges", and "The City of Light".

The city stretches across numerous small islands in the marshy Venetian Lagoon along the Adriatic Sea in northeast Italy. The saltwater lagoon stretches along the shoreline between the mouths of the Po (south) and the Piave (north) Rivers. The population estimate of 272,000 inhabitants includes the population of the whole Comune of Venezia; around 62,000 in the historic city of Venice (Centro storico); 176,000 in Terraferma (literally firm land, the areas outside the lagoon), mostly in the large frazione of Mestre and Marghera; and 31,000 live on other islands in the lagoon.

The Venetian Republic was a major sea power and a staging area for the Crusades, as well as a very important center of commerce (especially the spice trade) and art in the Renaissance.

Travel: Venice is served by the newly rebuilt Marco Polo International Airport, or Aeroporto di Venezia Marco Polo, named in honor of its famous citizen. The airport is on the mainland and was rebuilt away from the coast so that visitors now need to get a bus to the pier, from which a water taxi or Alilaguna waterbus can be used.

    Flight Information: http://boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055070441

    Main Sites: etc. etc.

etc. The information is simply taken from Wikipedia, which is generally basic enough. It would just be a few sections on the destination in question, and then people would post about it.

Anyone have any thoughts on this?

I think it is an excellent idea. As somebody who loves travelling, I would be very interested in it.

It's not a bad idea, but why not just go to TA for the info anyway!

    TA?

Part of it would be influence people to 'think' about new and potentially different destinations. For a lot of people (myself included) the problem is often with a lack of ideas on destinations. Think of the thread proposal as a cross between boards.ie and a travel show :p

There may be certain locations which are not advertised heavily but which hold gems of their own which users may have been to.

    By TA, I'm guessing www.tripadvisor.com
A site I use frequently when planning myself - just need to take
some of the reports (especially those by the ever demanding
septics) with a pinch of salt.
