Anxiety and worry

Does anyone else suffer from this? I've had it for years now and it's starting to ruin my life. I'm doing finals in college but instead of studying I'm worrying about stupid things. Basically I just expect the worst all the time and spend so much time worrying that I never have time to get anything done!

The latest thing is worrying about being pregnant despite having no reason to. I'm on the Pill and always use condoms as well yet every month I convince myself the protection hasn't worked. This month I was on antibiotics, the dr said to use condoms for 7 days afterwards. I didn't have sex at all until about 8 days after finishing them, with a condom, and he didn't ejaculate inside me. Yet I'm still completely paranoid, even knowing the chances are tiny. My boyfriend is starting to get fed up of me freaking out. Once I get the idea into my head, I start getting sore boobs, cramps etc. In the past I have also convinced myself I had AIDS, Hepatitis, diabetes and many other things. Tests all came back negative. People laugh at hypochrondriacs but it's not funny at all. It's ruining my life.

I also worry about relatives dying, being in a car crash, being attacked in the street and so on. Basically I'm always worried about something. Has anyone been able to overcome this? Would you recommend therapy of some kind? I'm very reluctant to mess with antidepressants.

Go ask your GP to refer you to a clinical psychologist. They can teach you effective CBT strategies to help you manage your anxiety. There are also many good books on the market that help to teach you to cope with the anxiety :)

    Hi Worrier,
Yes, I would recommend therapy to you. I had some therapy about 7 years ago and am having some again now, and it is a great help. Agree with Playboy, and would recommend CBT ( cognitive behavioural therapy) for anxiety and worry. You can find CBT therapists in the following site http://www.holisto.ie. Click on the drop-down box.

Hope this helps and best of luck.

    JT.

There are mild ones available. They're not as scary as you'd be led to believe. Let your doctor decide whether you should take them or not. If it turns out that they form part of the solution for you, well, that can't be a bad thing. You can't carry on like this forever. It's likely to take a serious toll on you.

    Best of luck.

    Hi,
Sorry to hear you are worrying all the time. I think you should definately try and go through your GP.

I've heard of friends worrying too much before, and they have said that CBT helped them.

Goodluck and I'm sure with a little help you'll be back to yourself soon.

    Take care
