    Sorry if this has been done before guys, but Could someone please enlighten me as To the difference between the two, I have studied a little Judo and I havent tried BJJ yet.

    Ive seen fights on youtube between a BJJ fighter and a Judo fighter, the're both wearing Gi's So as a lay person I have trouble distinguishing between the two.

    So whats the real difference?

    is it a big Difference or are they very simular arts?

    Is there more throws in Judo, more Submission in BJJ?

    Is there much of a crossover of techniques between the two?

    Judo focuses more on throws than BJJ, BJJ focues more on groundwork than Judo.

    The competition rules differ also. Judo does not allow leglocks while BJJ does. Judo awards a win for an ippon (perfect clean throw) while BJJ will only award points.

    The finer details for points in competition like stalling vary from different areas.. In BJJ, guys can be somewhat defensive standing and keep it there for a while without anything being said.. In judo if you're not offensive, you'll get penalised.

    Judo & BJJ cross very well into each other. A BJJ guy may train judo also to improve his throws and a Judo guy may train BJJ to improve his ground game.

    It also depends on the school. Take Andy Ryan for example, a Judo black belt and a BJJ purple belt. He has pretty much the whole package for judo & bjj, so he could cover alot more ground than say a straight bjj class or a straight judo class.

    One thing in common between both is that both require an element of non-compliant sparring and belts are typically earned through fighting for them.

    In my experience.

    BJJ = 90% ground, 10% standup.
    Judo = 70% standup, 30% ground.

    At least this is true in the places I've trained.

    These are just random videos from youtube.

    As John Kavanagh said to the same question on this forum...

    "Opposite sides of the same coin".
