Is it too much to ask of the average student to get a 1.1 honours degree or is it what they should all be going for and what exactly does one need to get a 1.1 honours degree??

A 1.1 is a 70% grade across whatever criteria is being examined. Easier said than done because most lecturers, especially in humanities type subjects, will only mark students out of about 80% or so anyway. A friend of mine wrote the best exam her lecturer had ever seen - and gave her 69% because she "doesn't give Firsts".

The average student DOESN'T get a 1.1 so it's not 'expected' as such: in UCD only 9% of degrees are Firsts.

Yes it's too much to ask of the average, otherwise you're not diving the results enough. Over 70% average I think.

How long is a piece of string?

Depends on the course and the students.
Some courses are harder than others, some students are more studious than others, and so on and so forth.
