An education is one of the most valuable things a person can have.
I see someone missed out :p

College degrees get people into more specialized positions in companies, positions which they need their education to actually be able to work in, these jobs are far, far better paying than your unqualified, entry level jobs.
Experience also goes a long way.

Depends. There are people with masters and all they can get is badly paid call centre work. There are people who didn't do a day in college and have really highly-paid jobs.

ah you quick judging people!!! i'm actually quite educated at the moment. i mean i am already above degree level but the choice of jobs isnt all that great when you only have a pass Hons degree. In fact it is pretty dire- I personally would advise not doing a course unless you are going to get top of the class.

Well i'll find out soon if I get the job I interviewed for this morning :)

A Degree is a Degree is a Degree in the eyes of an employer.
They want to see that you have the ability to follow through to completion and accomplish something. This degree does not necessarily have to have anything in common with the job you are applying to.

Have to agree there. I myself am a college drop out, having taken my second choice and realising that it wasn't my thing.
Ended up getting an entry level job in a bank and I've done pretty well, now earning more than most of my friends who have degrees (and some masters). Thats not the same for everyone and it definitely depends on what your degree is in. I reckon a degree is important dependant on the industry you want to be in. From what I've gathered, a business degree and an arts degree don't necessarily guarantee you a great job with loads of money. However, if you're planning on being the next einstein then some sort of science degree would be beneficial i'd imagine!

a degree means nothing anymore, but you'll often need a masters to move into a senior management position, therefore you have to get a degree first.

To be honest lads, i actually don't care about the whole degree situation or the misspelling of the word "college". The reason why i made this thread was because i want to know the breakdown of awards in the irish college system. (i.e. what average must be obtained to get a 2.1 degree etc) The whole ****e about the use of a degreee was just so that the thread would not be moved to another section where replies are less frequent.......ruff!

    so anyway does anybody know?....

    Fixed.

I say degrees are very handy, almost essential in my area at least (IT), other areas may vary. I'm not saying someone can't make it without one, but it does give you a huge advantage.
