SW England...looking for somewhere to relax

Hey everyone...I'm spending a few days in London the week after next, but after that I want to go somewhere a bit quieter in the UK to relax for a week. I've always wanted to see the SW coast (Cornwall, Devon, Dorset, but am having trouble finding any info on good spots to visit.

Basically I just want somewhere relaxing and fairly authentic, not too overrun by tourists. Great beaches are crucial, but I don't have a car (so will be relying on public transport) and will be staying in a hostel, so there has to be some sort of town or village nearby. Ideally, it would be somewhere quiet enough that is on a bus or train route to a larger town in case the rain comes and I get bored. I'm fairly flexible with all of the above, just looking for somewhere to sit on the beach, do a bit of swimming, explore the countryside, but perhaps also have some options for getting to a town by public transport if the weather doesn't work out.

I don't ask for much, do I.

    Any suggestions?
