MP3 player with external mic

Stupid question time - would I be able to hook up a small external microphone to any MP3 player with a line-in audio jack? I'm thinking for the price of a 64mb dictaphone I could get a 1gig MP3 player and an external mic (internal mike is no use to me in this situation)

My zen touch has a cable with external mic/radio. I cant see why you cant hook up a mic to yours if you have a line-in.
