Experts Please Recommend A Good DVD RW Brand . . .

Was using Imation DVD+RW DVD (capacity 4.7 GB) for backing up data.

Nero 7 enhanced trial version for burning.

    Burns small pdf files okay.

But large folders it aborts during verification stage due to "too much read errors".

Most likely a media error I feel rather than a rewriter problem or Nero problem.

Can experienced people recommend suitable media for back-up DVDs, keeping in mind that changes to backed up files will be made every day ?

Both manufacturer and format may need to be considered here . . .

    Regards,

    Tak.

check for a firmware update for your burner.

    Auvers,

    Upgrading makes no difference.
Still get loads of read errors - too many apparently to allow burning to continue.

Must be the DVD media, I reckon.
Will scout town tomorrow for better make than Imation.

I notice it is not truly re-writable -- it just over-writes on whatever is there.

    Tak.

hmmm must be a bad batch I have used Imation for quite a while with no problems. But if in doubt just go for verbatim

I've used both verbatim and imation for years... can't say I've had terrible problems with either brand.

I know it's not what you asked, but - you could always invest a hundred euro in an external (500GB) USB/Firewire harddrive (or two for some redundancy)... I'm not sure if this is common at all in business or there's some other reason you're comitted to DVD, but for personal backups I find it excellent.
It's much faster and probably still smaller and lighter than a large stack of DVDs... it might work out cheaper too eventually.

I have always found Verbatim to be the best DVD RWs but I would reiterate what the previous poster said. DVD RWs will fail if constantly reused and they are not suitable for backing up critical data. An external USB hard drive is definitely the way to go.

Even the guy in the Dixon's had trouble with a few disks from each batch of 30.

Agree with Donkey & El Nino - HD backup is faster, automatic (using logoff script) and more reliable.

That is the end of it.

    Tak.
