Measuring Dublin's use of frequency spectrum from ComReg's roof

This may be of interest to some of you:

Spectrum usage in the 30MHz - 3GHz* range in Dublin city was measured over a 40 hour period from the top of ComReg's building in the middle of April by a US company called Shared Spectrum Company.

The plots, which show spectral occupancy and how this can vary between day and night, frequency bands, and types of services using it, may be found here

*The 88-108 MHz band was excluded from these measurements.

    Why ?

Embarrasment at the number/strength of pirate radio signals perhaps ? :D

This is part of a CTVR project on spectrum flexibility. However it is not a realistic way to discover spectrum usage.

Their monitoring equipment can detect signals > -115dBm (approx). The 88-108MHz frequency range was blocked to avoid desensitising the system and causing intermodulation problems due to the really high power in this band (in the mV range directly from the antenna on some frequencies).

Or to keep up the pretence that launching the NE Regional, the Irish&Country and Classic Rock service can all take place without screwing up reception of something, for someone, somewhere in the city ;)
