Venice on a budget!

A group of four of us are heading to Venice in the middle of June- a last minute decision. Can anyone recommend cheap accommodation in the central areas? Looking to get an apartment/self catering but most I've come across are over budget and too swanky for us students anyway. Anything for 30 euro or less a night per person would be brilliant. And yes I know how hard it will be to find anything in that price range! Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Was in Venice for a couple of days while interrailing last Summer. Stayed in a place I think was called the Leonardo DaVinci hotel,on Leonardo street I think (turn left leaving the main train station and keep walkin 10mins at most, and its on ur left down a tiny lane) wasn't more than €30 a night per person for a 3 person room (Double bed and a single bed in a tiny tiny room). But I think that was the cheapest we could find but we just arrived in Venice and started searchin for accomodation, nothing was planned.

I've good memories of my time in venice...5 of us sleeping in the square, then across to Lido on one of the boats for sunrise (though I think it happened while we were en route). Now that was cheap!

if you're really on a budget there's a campsite on the mainland with a water taxi service direct to venice ( about a 20 minute spin). We stayed there a few years back and it's got it's own restaurant and lively bar. They rent out chalet's (portacabin type jobs) or you can bring your own tent:

I found the hostel santa fosca. Has anyone stayed there or heard anything about it. It looks great- basic and clean. It says on their website they don't except bookings until 7 days before the arrival date. Yet on other websites like hostelworld etc they say its unavailable.

We stayed here in May it is clean and you can get a room for about 35 euro but must share bathroom but it has a great central location in the student district. Look it up in www.tripadvisor.com the web address is www. locandaforscari.com. It is quite easy to do Venice on a budget just dont eat or drink anything in the st mark sq area and buy your food from the windows the have lovely pizza also buy a water bus pass for at least 24 hrs so you get your bearings enjoy!

Yeah, another plus for Camping at Fusina. Just, eh, if you're camping think about staying away from trees. While myself and the missus were there last year, there was a freak storm (on both nights, which apparently doesn't happen very often) and a large part of a tree fell and hit us while we were in the tent. I had to go to Hospital to get my wrist x-rayed and then put into a soft cast, and herself got hit on the head by it (but was ok).

Even still, I'd recommend it as a place to stay!
