Turning off desktop icons & resulting decrease in wallpaper image quality

This seems like a strange one to me. I'm running XP and have installed a Mac-like dock with all the programs I need on it which pops down from the top of the screen. For uncluttered-ness I have turned off the desktop icons as I don't need them. Now, when I do this my wallpaper decreases in quality quite dramatically. I have a vector image as my background which looks great with the icons turned on, when they are turned off it becomes pixelated and the lines become more jagged.

Anything I can do to get around this?

    Thank you
