Airsoft, is it just better looking paintball guns with out the paint? what do you do at these skirmishes? Same rules as paintball? I'm kinda assuming its just like paintballing, but you get more of a kick out of it because of the range of weapons and the realism

And do the bbs hurt more or less than paintballs?

Just looking to understand the scene alittle better.

It's similar to paintball in that some of the games played are similar, but there is also a whole other aspect of airsoft called MilSim which simulates actual combat to a further extent with the correct uniforms and equipment etc...

but most average skirmishes are just good ol' have fun and shoot

the overall accuracy and range of airsoft guns is much better than paintball guns, airsoft guns fire with a fair bit less power than a paintball, but because the bbs are much smaller they still have better range and the impact doesnt hurt as much

there is also the collecting side of things, since the guns are basically replicas of the real thing, which is interesting if your into guns, the replicas range in quality from 1:1 in terms of size etc... (which most aegs are) to really high quality replicas with the real markings/weight and material finish

also, avoid use of the term weapon, something only becomes a weapon when used in a threatening (weapon-like) way

Just to let you know before this thread kicks off....
You're going to have a whole host of people coming in and saying
"Airsoft is cool! Paintball is...less than cool!" etc etc

It's all down to preference. I prefer airsoft myself as I like the whole collecting and realism aspect that goes with it.

Other players prefer paintball as they're more into a "speedball" type play.(Fast games in a smaller gaming area.)

Yea, but in all honesty, Airsoft is cool and paintball is less cool! :p

nah, just kidding, this forum is slightly unbalanced with alot more airsofters than paintball players, irish-paintball.net is where you want to go for the paintball perspective... but airsoft does have some niceties like realism and such

I think you've basically got the idea, ShowUsYourXbox. It's essentially paintball with more realistic (in my opinion) equipment. Although because the BBs don't leave a visible mark on your clothes, the sport relies more heavily on the honesty and sportsmanship of its participants. It usually works just fine though, with just the odd moaner (as I found out last time I was at HRTA!).

I find the BBs hurt less than paintballs, but the pain lasts for longer. Paintballs are bigger, so they're producing more energy as they leave the marker, and when it hits you it produces more of a dull thud like you got a punch in the arm from a strong midget. BBs produce a sharper sensation and last about a minute. It sucks getting hit, but it's no big deal. It's more annoying that you have to return to your spawn point :p

You can shoot me 1000 times with your AEG, but please, for the love of god, don't make me walk back half a mile to respawn :(

Most games now in HRTA are 1 shot = your out. No respawn. It means quicker games and a whole lot more incentive to not get hit.

BUT, I have noticed a small increase in people not taking their hits, especially if they get hit a few seconds into the game. That's why some of the more recent games have used the '2 lives each' rule instead.

I'm not sure if paintball has similar games/rules.

Played PB in France (In jumpsuits in 30*C) and when you were hit you were out till everyone was dead.

Airsoft guns can look more realistic than paintball markers, purely cause they do not need large 'hoppers' to store the paintballs and a tank for the gas/air.
You can get markers that are very realisic looking, how ever these may only hold 50 paintballs and an internal gas/storage area

Mil sim is still more popular in paintball than speedball worldwide in general, every year there are huge 'big games' organised every year for mil sim fans to renact famous battles with paintball gear. They also do fantsy games. stargate was a big one in 2006.

Plus some of the marks can last for months at a time, my leg just looks ridiculous...two marks on it from quite a while ago!

What kinda range do you get from your averege Airsoft ..rifle (I dunno what kind of termonology I should be using here, basically legal here and.. standard enough), and what kind of grouping would you get at say 100ft ?

Does wind have serious effects on the shots ?

    Thanks

depends on your definition of range, effective range (i.e. you'd actually hit someone) i'd say maybe 150ft max, but it depends on the power and accuracy of the airsoft in question.

grouping at 100ft? again it depends on the aeg in question, but i'd say maybe 6-10" with a bolt action rifle with a scope

wind can affect shots a bit, but it's not too bad, the heavier bbs you use, the less effect wind has, but this also decreases your range

Yeh, i meant effective range. That would not be vastly different to the accuracy of paintball markers. Not the battered to ****e type you get at paintball venues, but say the likes of a Tippmann A5 with a nice barrell.

Effective range would be about 150 ft, and at 100ft I could land a shot on your head..allthough I'm not meant to .. what I more so mean is target size..
Matching paint and barrell bore size, would help greatly in a situation like that.

Wind can have pretty drastic effects on shots, but it can be used to your advantage depending on the situation. I mean strong wind though, not a breeze. Cold and hot weather also make things very interesting. I've played on blistering hot days, and the paintballs were hitting, then bouncing like rubber balls ! Terrfying if a barrage came in !

We should all meet up and compare toys some day.
