Not sure if this is a bargain or not just wanted to run it by you guys was in tescos and i see a 12mgp digital camera for 79 euros, i didnt know cameras went up to 12mgp (not up to speed on digital cameras). i asked to look/handle it and it felt flimsy and the screen was quiet small but i was still gonna purchase it as it seemed ok for 79 yoyos. Any opinions on it? Should i buy or just spend more on a better model???
    Seb

I'd be extremely surprised if it was a 12MP for 79 euro!
Cheapest I can find anything over 8MP online is about 200.

It will be a 3MP camera 'interpolated' to 12MP....**** in other words

12 mp does not mean a better picture, if anything it will result in a lower quality image due to small sensor, 79 euro/tesco/12mp, it sounds awful. what is the exact model? Just look at aldi camera reviews...similar prices, rotten quality

12Mp for €79 euros is going to be useful as a paperweight, and nothing much more.

Seriously, for anybody interested in any 12mp compact camera (or 10mp for that matter), do yourselves a big favour - ignore them and go for 8mp, or better still 5mp. All this marketing led hype of cramming more pixels into the same tiny space drives noise way up, and picture quality way down. Yes you probably won't be able to make an A3 print from a 5mp image, but you'll probably be able to make a nice 10x8" one, which you most probably won't with a 10-12mp image from a compact. As a wise man once said "Ye cannae change the laws of physics cap'n"

Even if it is only 3mp by default it is still a good bargain and sufficient for normal photography.

The Canon Powershot A550 and A560 are supposed to be really nice little cameras, and are getting good reviews. I haven't used either specific model, but we bought an earlier model (I think the A520) for my brother in law as a present a while back, and it was really nice, good quality image wise and well built. Both these should be findable on the net in your price bracket.

Today's Ibood looks like a good buy if you're in the market for a EUR100 price range camera. 8 megapixels, 3x Optical zoom.

Yes it is crazy the way they are marketed, people are blinded by numbers. It would be like people saying "I can get a PC with a 500gb hard drive for €400" is that a good deal, well it could be a pentium 1 with a big HD, still a bag of ****e.

I have taken pics with a 3MP camera for A4 brochures in work, printers were asking me who did the photography (i.e. thinking it was professional).

A FOAF was insisting on a 8MP camera, was never going to print bigger than standard photo size.

People see all the numbers and go mid range, same with PCs "I only want email and word, better spend at least €800". Most people end up reducing pics to 1MP quality anyway.

3-5MP is big enough for me, I would be looking at the video res size more nowadays since big cards are cheap/.

I got a Fuji F10 about 18 months ago, very happy with it. 6.3 MP, big screen, takes decent pictures in low light with no flash, rechargable battery which last for ages - forgot the charger last time I went away for a week and got through about 4 days of fairly intensive snapping before it ran out.

There's later models out now (F11 anyway, if not an F12?) which might be better, though you can prob get an F10 for under 200 now.

I'd recommend the Fuji FinePix F31FD

This is the newer version of the F30 - lovely little camera with plenty of features which take it away from just being a point and shoot - superb in low light situations, quality particularly good at 800asa. Look at the promo pack deal too - might be worth your while to get the whole kit (extra battery, 1GB card, case) even if it is a little outside your budget - shop around you may get the extras cheaper elsewhere.

DP review give it a highly recommended in their review

The Ibood one is now sold out.

I got a Fuji F11 a few months back from Jessops in the UK. Couldnt recommend it enough. Produces fantastic photos and you dont have to be an expert - just point and shoot, built in rechargeable battery and it lasts a long time. 6.3 mp.

Most people only print 6x4 for which even a 2 or 3mp is enough. Megapixels is the last thing to be concerned about.
