Does anyone know of a military strategy type game that starts with set piece battles and allows you to command the troops, sort of like a RTS but with no resource gathering or town building ?

Medieval 2 Total War which you bought from me :p

That's all I can think of, coincidentally, I prefer the other sort of Stat Games.

Rome : Total War / Barbarian Invasion
    Medieval 2 : Total War

The main series of games for that sort of thing

However, Warhammer recently released a game of that sort aswell, called Warhammer :Mark of Chaos ;)

Rome will cost ye about 6 euro, as its on one of them best selling series now, and Medieval and Warhammer probably about 25 each

Or you could download demo versions to test em out yourself before you go and spend your money :D

Best place i find to download demo's of games is
    http://www.gamershell.com

    Hope that helps

Can I heartily recommend the Close Combat series? That's if you're not too bothered about your strategy games being 2D or 3D. Never been bettered IMHO.

Agree wholeheartly with Ambro with Close Combat 3 being the best IMHO.

Yeah, Close Combat games are some of the best of their kind, although, my favourite was CC5: Invasion Normandy, but they're all good. (except the FPS version)

I enjoyed the Sudden Strike and Cold War Conflict games.
    Also Blitzkreig (Spelling)

    Also Blitzkrieg (Spelling)

    Fixed ;)

Theres the Combat Mission series, latest one is called Shock Force and is set in a modern conflict between the US and Syria

Possibily you might like the Take Command series as well - ACW centered wargames that dont look better than Medieval Total War [the first one] but compensate with scale. Its scenario driven, but some of them are excellent and can be replayed at different levels of command - Brigades, Division or the entire army.

Its a specialist/niche product - it would/does get slated for not being C&C outside that specialist/niche audience. One of the huge advantages of PC gaming is that games like that get made at all and are available.
