    From rte.ie/business
American Airlines has confirmed that it is ending its transatlantic service from Shannon from the autumn. It currently operates a daily service to Chicago. The company confirmed that the decision is related to the 'open skies' policy, which is aimed at opening up the transatlantic aviation market.

American Airlines is the biggest US airline and began services from Shannon in 2005 - initially to Boston, but more recently to Chicago.

A spokesperson confirmed today that its service out of Shannon will end from October 1. He said the airline had examined the profitability of its services from Ireland and the advent of open skies meant it was now going to focus on its Dublin-Chicago route.

Shannon Airport management says it has no formal notice of a withdrawal, but a spokeswoman said the company had not confirmed its plans for the autumn.
