    Hi

Just want to cancel my subscription as im leaving my rented accommodation. I subscribed sept 06 so i don't have it 1 year yet.

Must I return the set top box? I pay by direct debit so will I just cancel this?

    Thanks

Yes you will have to return the equipment, you usually have to give notice of your wish for termination of your contract usually 2weeks to a months. They may collect the equipment at your new address if you advise them to do so.

...or they may like many others never collect the equipment. I know a few people that moved into a new house/apartment to find a stb left there from the previous tenant. Wouldn't worry too much about the stb,it's up to NTL if they wish to get their equipment back.
You'll probably have to pay to get out of the 12 month subscription at worst.

I canceled my NTL sub in a rented house with no issues and I was there less then 12 months. Just say you are leaving the country or something.
They did pickup the STB when I told them I would leave them in my parents house but it was about a month after I left the rent house.
I would fear if yea left the box in the house that they would charge yea if they went to get it from the house and the new tenant has binned it.

NOTE: If you pay by direct debit that you write a letter to your banks branch canceling the DD. If you don't, NTL might (as they did on me) reactivate the account for the new residents of the rented house and keep charging you when they are "waiting for the new peoples account details"!!!! (feckers!)
PITA to get your cash back, took me 4 months...
